The Viet Nam ICT in Finance 2008 conference opened last Thursday in the capital with a clear message that boosting information communication technology (ICT) applications is an urgent task for the country.

This is the fifth year for the country’s largest event on ICT in the finance sector. The focus for the two-day event was on "e-government" in the financial industry, the deployment of information and financial statistics, ICT solutions for business innovation, business-continuity-management and security systems using digital certification in the financial industry.

Another goal of the event was to supply ICT solution providers with numerous projects to modernise the financial sector and networking opportunities with potential clients.

Despite some encouraging results, ICT applications in the financial sector still face many challenges in regulation compliance, insufficient infrastructure and shortages of IT specialists, according to Dang Duc Mai, director of the Department of Financial Informatics and Statistics under the finance ministry.

The major goal for ICT applications in the finance sector in the next two years is the acceleration of e-government efforts, including a portal to provide citizens and enterprises with updated information about legislation, policies, administrative procedures, public bidding and the improvement of information security.

Mai said the main methods to boost ITC would be development of a comprehensive legal framework, synchronous and effective investments and enhance capacities of IT staff.

The second day of the conference included a panel discussion on ICT for strategic planning and decision making.

A side-line expo with about 20 kiosks at the conference offered solution providers and technology corporations an opportunity to showcase themselves and introduce new technology, which was co-organised by the Department of Financial Informatics and Statistics and International Data Group, one of the world’s leading technology media research companies.
