The new biometric residence permits, used with a passport, give the holder free travel without a visa, throughout the Schengen area.
The credit card size documents contain a biometric chip with data that will be stored for five years by the canton that issues it.
The data includes a photo and two fingerprints, as well as several items of information (see list, pdf).
The chip and its data may be used only for issuing a new identity document. The data is protected by a secure access control and electronic key, according to the Swiss Federal Migration Office.

Geneva information on residence permits (Fr)
Vaud information: note for Vaud residents – the cantonal office moved in mid-January to a new address, where passports and residence permits are issued: Voie du Chariot 3 – 1003 Lausanne Flon. It’s open six days a week, 07:30-18:30 (17:30 on Saturdays) and the move has allowed the canton to double the number of desks handling applications.
