Transforming Government since 2001
In line with the Singapore Government’s continuous efforts to enhance its online presence, the Ministry of Information, Communication and the Arts (MICA) today launched a new Gov.sg application for Android phones.

This is in addition to the Gov.sg iPhone app which was launched in June this year.

MICA has also further improved the Gov.sg iPhone app for the latest iPhone OS 4, which supports multi-tasking.

www.Gov.sg is now available on Android Phones

MICA has further improved the Gov.sg iPhone app for the latest iPhone OS 4, which supports multi-tasking.

The enhanced application boasts a more intuitive and user-friendly interface to allow users to access a greater number of government-related news stories and electronic-services.

The Gov.sg app was developed for Android phones to cater to the increasing popularity of smartphones using Google’s Android operating system.

The public can now enjoy the convenience of accessing the latest government news updates and electronic services, such as calendar of events, directory of contact information and feedback channels, on-the-go.

Rear Admiral (NS) SIM Gim Guan, Deputy Secretary (Information and Corporate Management) MICA, said: “The Singapore Government has been engaging the public through online platforms, and the addition of mobile apps will reach out to the increasingly mobile and younger generation. With the www.gov.sg portal and mobile apps, the public can look forward to an integrated and seamless access to the latest news updates and services across all government agencies from a single platform.”

Since the launch of the portal in June this year, the Government has seen encouraging results in its efforts in connecting with the public.

Currently, the portal receives an average of 8.7 million views per month, and garnered more than 14,000 Gov.sg iPhone app downloads (as at Oct 2010).

Within the first week of the launch itself, the Gov.sg iPhone app registered as the top three under News/Free application category (behind The Straits Times and Channel NewsAsia) on App Store.

RADM (NS) Sim added: “There is currently, an increasing ubiquity and popularity of smartphones in the market. This is largely due to the excellent national broadband and mobile infrastructure which support 3G and Wi-Fi services. The government is moving in tandem with this development and the changing consumption pattern.

This increasing mobile usage provides an opportunity for the government to extend its range of services to better reach out to the people.”

An increasing number of government agencies are leveraging on mobile services to reach out to the public.

There are currently more than 300 mobile services offered by the Singapore Government, either as rich applications, mobile web services or SMS notifications.

Recently launched services include OurCommunity.sg by the People’s Association and CPF Tools by the Central Provident Fund Board.

Moving forward, fuelled by Singapore’s high mobile penetration rate (141.4% as at Sep 2010) and increasing 3G subscription rates, the plans for the future of government mobile services will be further aligned with the next e-Government masterplan.
