The Ministry of Education (MoE) has unveiled its endorsement of the International Computer Driving Licence (ICDL) programme and its adoption in all its public schools effective this academic year, as a standard for upgrading the computer skills in the education sector across the Sultanate, following the success of the programme in other parts of the Gulf region.

Oman’s plan to strengthen its presence in the big world of e-government will get off to a major start with the move to launch government convergence network by this November, Ahmed bin Abdulnabi Macki, minister of national economy and deputy chairman of the Financial Affairs and Energy Resources Council, told the Times of Oman.

The Sultanate has called for better government services as a priority instead of merely “converting them into e-enterprises on the heels of a global trend”.

This clarion call was made by Maqbool bin Ali Sultan, minister of commerce and industry, who was addressing the first phase of the World Summit on Information Society being held here as His Majesty the Sultan’s representative yesterday.

Oman is going ahead with its e-government programme.

Government sources told the Times of Oman that the e-government programme was in progress as scheduled earlier, and would be implemented as soon as possible.

Participants in the e-governance symposium here have agreed on the necessity to introduce the e-government as it improves the way public services are provided; is transparent; reduces bureaucracy and expands the working opportunities, especially for women.
