Transforming Government since 2001

The Eastern Region Municipality has launched an ambitious initiative to document and digitize trees across Al-Khobar, aiming to make it the Kingdom’s first smart green city, with the first phase involving the documentation of more than 100,000 trees.

The municipality stated that the project enhances Al-Khobar’s standing among the world’s leading smart cities, noting its current position at 61st in the 2025 Smart Cities Index. The effort aligns with the city’s commitment to environmental sustainability, providing economic opportunities for companies engaged in tree-planting campaigns, boosting investment in smart city and environmentally sustainable infrastructure, and fostering environmental awareness and social responsibility.

As part of the project, each tree will be fitted with an electronic numbering card containing detailed information in Arabic and English, including the tree’s location, significance, and care requirements. The cards are linked to a geographic database mapping tree distribution across the city.

So far, more than 10,000 trees have been documented along the southern corniche, waterfront, northern corniche, and main roads. The project will gradually expand to cover all trees throughout Al-Khobar, positioning the city as a global model for environmental innovation.
