    AI is no longer just a buzzword. Across Asia, the technology is already woven into daily life — and Malaysia is only beginning to catch up.

  • MA: China-funded smart city to bring tech and jobs to Morocco

    The new industrial district of Mohammed VI Tangier Tech City, a joint Chinese-Moroccan project, is taking shape in northern Morocco's coastal city of Tangier.

    The project was one of many agreed between China and Morocco during the visit of Morocco's King Mohammed VI to China in 2016.

    Construction began in the second half of last year and the new city will eventually cover approximately 2,000 hectares and host over 200 multinational companies in a range of free trade industrial zones, technology hubs, residential areas and commercial spaces.

  • Macao Government embarks on 4-year smart city project via public-private partnership

    During the first phase which will run till June 2019, a cloud computing data centre will be built in Macao and data mapping will be done for information by the Government.

    The Government of Macau signed an agreement with the Alibaba Group on August 4 to further develop the special administrative region (SAR) as a smart city. Under the "Framework Agreement of Strategic Cooperation on Smart City Development", the Government will leverage Alibaba's big data processing capabilities to enhance the quality of the city's public services.

  • Malaysia, China to collaborate on smart city pilot projects

    Malaysia and China have agreed to strengthen cooperation in developing smart city pilot projects, with plans to establish smart city command centres in Malaysia's second-tier cities such as Ipoh and Seberang Perai.

    The initiative was discussed during a bilateral meeting between Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming and China's Minister of Housing and Urban-Rural Development Ni Hong, held in conjunction with the Asean-China Ministerial Roundtable on Construction 2025 in Guilin, China.

  • Microblogging of Chinese officials, gov't agencies increases

    The number of microblog accounts verified as managed by government officials or departments on China's four major websites reached 50,561 by the end of 2011, according to a report unveiled on Wednesday.

    The amount of governmental microblog accounts had increased more than seven fold from the beginning of the year, according to the report conducted by the Chinese Academy of Governance (CAG).

    The four major websites that the report refers to are www.sina.com.cn, www.qq.com, www.people.com.cn and www.xinhuanet.com which provide Twitter-like microblogging services.

  • MO: Gov’t presents five-year plan to develop e-government

    The MSAR government presented its five-year plan for the overall development of the e-government project.

    Published on the government’s official webpage (www.gov.mo) on the last day of 2015, the plan consists of six parts and details measures to be developed between 2015 and 2019.

    The highlights of the plan were several measures that aim to create a unified platform in collaboration with the Public Administration and Civil Service Bureau (SAFP) in order to better manage and store data related to human resources, finance and property management. The single platform would allow citizens to more readily obtain information and lodge requests concerning different public service procedures; to submit applications; to clarify the status of pending applications, or to even complete online payments.

  • Mobile apps and Internet of Things to take off in China

    With the availability of mobile broadband infrastructure, mobile applications for governments will take off in China, Professor Qu Chengyi, Member of the Advisory Committee for State Informatisation (ACSI), told FutureGov.

    ACSI advises the Premier and other senior State Council officials on the issues concerning the use of information technology within the government as well as in the society.

    “Merely two years ago, although mobile phones were widely available, few leveraged that for business applications,” he said, adding that this year he has witnessed a few governments taking the lead to leverage this platform, when 3G network is available and smart phones are abundant.

  • Modernization in motion as China's "city of the future" Xiong'an takes shape rapidly

    At the end of March, a new sports center with a seating capacity of over 40,000 opened in Xiong'an New Area in northern China's Hebei Province, filling a key gap in the region's capacity to host large-scale sports and cultural events.

    The Xiong'an New Area, located about 100 kilometers southwest of Beijing, was established on April 1, 2017. It aims to relieve Beijing of non-essential functions related to its status as the nation's capital, while also advancing the coordinated development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. The process explores a new model of development in densely populated areas.

  • More government departments in China open portal websites

    More government departments in China have opened portal websites, but their efficiency is still relatively low, a report released by the information work office under the State Council said here Thursday.

    Altogether 73, or 96.1 percent, of the 76 government departments at the state level have started portal websites, 2.7 percent higher than the figure in 2004, said the report.

    Dagang Nexchange Berhad (DNeX) is tying up with Zhongheguoji Construction Group Co Ltd (CSI) to source for state-of-the-art technology and solutions from China.

    In a statement, DNeX said it is establishing a joint venture with CSI for the establishment of a joint venture enterprise (JVE) to also expand its geographical footprint into the Middle East and North Africa (Mena) region.

  • MY: i-City and China Mobile to build the country's first smart green corporate tower

    i-City Properties (i-City) will collaborate with China Mobile International (Malaysia) (CMIM) to construct the country's first smart green corporate tower in i-City, Malaysia No. 1 technology city.

    According to Monica Ong, director of i-City, the corporate tower will be outfitted with 5G internet-enabled cameras and sensors to monitor the environment, energy consumption, and human traffic flow for data collection purposes.

    Malaysia and China will sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in the fields of housing, urban planning, and smart cities, announced Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming.

    In a statement on Tuesday, Nga said the exchange of the MOU between Malaysia's Ministry of Housing and Local Government and China's Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development will be witnessed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Li Qiang, during the Chinese premier's official three-day visit to the country from Tuesday to Thursday.
