Transforming Government since 2001

  • When cities become smart – so will the criminals

Smart cities are becoming a reality rather than a concept, and integrating technology into everyday infrastructure has become a norm.

They present local authorities with a vast number of opportunities, including data-driven decision-making, enhanced engagement between citizens and the government and a reduced environmental footprint.

  • Why Estonia Is the Poster Child for Cyber-Security

I'm just back from a conference on cyber security held in Estonia, or, as the editors always force me to write: "the tiny Baltic nation of Estonia." Other popular tropes: "in Estonia, more than 90 percent of all banking is done online, digital signatures are used widely by government officials and you can pay for parking with your cell phone. Geeks have dubbed the place E-stonia. Oh, and four Estonians built Skype."

Right, we get it. Twenty years ago, the country shook free of the Soviets and made a strategic decision to invest, heavily, in information technology. The country's President, Toomas Hendrik Ilves, put it this way: "We are a small, unassuming European country that's fairly advanced when it comes to Internet applications."

  • Why the UK needs the Cyber Security Challenge

Web scheme is seeing real results in finding the next generation of IT security experts

The UK’s shortage of cyber security professionals dates back to the dot-com bubble, when industry growth across the IT sector opened up a wealth of new career opportunities.

Alongside the US, the UK had pioneered cyber security up to then and looked well placed to take advantage. However, the growth never materialised. A 2009 SANS Institute survey of cyber security professionals revealed 90 per cent had experienced difficulty recruiting. While industry need and raw talent have never decreased, the conveyer belt turning skilled amateurs into security professionals has stalled.

  • Will IoT Implementation in Renewable Energy Create New Cyber Attack Risks?

Water, Wind and Solar energy (WWS) has the potential to replace diminishing and polluting fossil fuel, petroleum, coal and other traditional power sources in a way that can change the very course of our planet’s future.

Sustainable energy is already driving positive changes throughout the world, even as we are still early in the process of scaling WWS and making naturally generated power available through more modern grids, in the developed and developing worlds.

  • ZA: City of Joburg e-Statements still offline

The electronic statement viewing system of the City of Joburg is remains offline following the discovery of a security flaw

Residents of the City of Joburg are still unable to view their bills on the e-Services portal of the municipality’s website after it was disabled due to the discovery of a security flaw over 2 months ago.

Ratepayers are also not able to sign up to receive their statements by e-mail due to the downtime, a spokesperson for City of Joburg told MyBroadband.

  • ZA: Cyber-security – Essential in realising our e-Government ambitions

We often talk about cyber-security from the perspective of the private sector, however, governments and public sector organisations hold vast troves of data on citizens. If this gets into the wrong hands, it can wreak havoc, and diminish the trust among the voting public.

We have already seen elements of this in South Africa. For instance it was reported that in 2016 almost 9 million South Africans were victims of some form of cyber-crime. Government plays a crucial role in securing the citizen data held in its databases, as well as in helping to educate our nation on the measures to protect themselves against global crime syndicates.

  • ZW: It Governance, Cyber Security Institute Launched

ITGCSI also assists organisations identify how they use information to meet their strategic business goals, then determine the best ways to protect their information assets throughout the information security lifecycle.
