eTicketing

  • How contactless ticketing is changing public transport in the Middle East

With 88% of transit agencies planning to deploy contactless ticketing within two years, cities like Dubai, Riyadh, and Doha are leading the charge toward open-loop fare collection

A quiet revolution is unfolding across the Middle East’s transport networks. Gone are the days of fumbling for cash or queuing at ticket machines. Instead, commuters are increasingly tapping their way through metro gates, boarding buses with a wave of their smartphones, and using digital wallets to pay for their daily commutes. Contactless and open-loop ticketing systems are becoming the new standard, marking a significant shift in how transit agencies manage fare collection.

  • Canada: Ottawa: City partners up for 'smarter' transit technology

The City of Ottawa is joining with transit agencies in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) to make smartcard technology a reality by 2010, the city said in a release Friday.

With Presto – a contactless, automated fare system developed with the Government of Ontario – the project will result in "significant savings" to the City of Ottawa, according to the release.

  • IN: Delhi Buses Go Digital With Smart Card Ticketing

The Delhi Transport Corporation is set to launch a contactless smart card-based ticketing system for its vast city bus network.

The initiative, which is expected to go live within a month, is part of a larger agenda to eliminate paper-based passes and usher in a more efficient, eco-conscious fare collection system in India’s capital city. This development is being implemented under the guidance of the Delhi government, with the Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS) entrusted to oversee the rollout. DIMTS will also distribute the contactless cards to commuters for a nominal fee of ₹50. The original manufacturing and setup cost of each card is ₹71, but a significant portion of that will be subsidised to encourage widespread adoption. Once issued, the cards can be topped up or recharged easily, and pass renewals will cost ₹14.

  • IN: Kerala to introduce e-ticketing in cinema houses

With a view to promoting e-governance in all sectors, the Kerala Government has decided to introduce e-ticketing in cinema houses in the State.

The necessary laws to introduce e-ticketing in cinema houses would be brought in through an ordinance, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy told presspersons after a Cabinet meeting today.

Earlier, Chandy while inaugurating a file tracking system of the secretariat titled ‘Information and Data Exchange Advanced System’ (IDEAS) said the Government wanted to strengthen e-governance in the State.

  • IN: Kerala: Thiruvananthapuram: KSRTC to start e-ticketing, buses to have security cams

Very soon, selected Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses operating within the city limits will have surveillance cameras to monitor the driver and detect traffic violations, a passenger information system (PIS) and Android-based ticketing machines.

The project is being implemented in association with Smart City Thiruvananthapuram Limited (SCTL).

SCTL has invited tenders from firms for implementing the project. The location of the project will be the pan city area in the capital under the smart city project.

  • India: E-tickets form 98 percent of online rail reservations

E-tickets accounted for 98 percent of the total 6.85 crore train tickets, booked online till October-end in the current fiscal. With e-ticket (electronic ticket) booking facility, the Railways allowed passengers to take a ticket print-out at their end after booking the ticket.

The i-ticket (Internet-ticket) facility, introduced by the Railways in 2002-03, allows users to book a ticket through the Internet, reports Business Line. But the ticket print-out is taken by Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) and delivered by post to the passengers. The Railways, which launched e-tickets in 2005 after about a year of delay since the proposal was envisaged - feared that the e-tickets may be misused. E-tickets have proven to be a hit since their launch. Apart from the sheer ease of taking the print-out at the user's end without having to wait for a courier delivery, the fact that the service charge for booking e-tickets are cheaper than i-tickets also helped.

  • TZ: Electronic ticketing: Key element for integration of public transport

IT systems, implemented ever more widely in all branches of the economy, also increasingly become tools for integration of various stages of transport process, transport modes, and transport offer of different entities functioning on the market.

E-ticketing technologies are increasingly used as tools for integrating public transport worldwide.

  • US: New Jersey: Police in 7 Camden County towns to use E-Ticketing

Seven Camden County police departments are changing the way officers deliver motor vehicle summonses.

Under the “E-Ticketing” system, a motorist is given a summons printed out by a mobile printer in a police vehicle. Advocates say the system is faster than writing tickets by hand, allowing for officers and motorists to get back on the road faster.

The system is part of a shared services agreement between police departments in Bellmawr, Gloucester Township, Haddon Heights, Magnolia, Oaklyn, Pine Hill and Runnemede. It is to be officially announced at a press conference in Gloucester Township on Wednesday afternoon.
