Governance

  • An E-Governance Model

A new report by Accenture notes that leading governments are moving beyond using traditional technologies to strengthen their relationships with citizens and modifying conventional models of service delivery in innovative new ways.

The report, called "From e-Government to e-Governance", stressed the importance of spurring innovation within the government workforce, largely by encouraging employees to take greater responsibility for the efficiency and effectiveness of information workflows, business processes, programs and delivery channels.

  • Asian governance and the 'Knowledge Economy'

A more knowledge-intensive approach to governance will redefine how the public sector relates internally to its own agencies and its own employees.

Stripped down to its bare essentials, e-government is concerned with leveraging and distributing knowledge more effectively – government-to-citizen (G2C), government-to-business (G2B) and inter-departmentally within government (G2G).

  • Bangladesh: Vested interests always act against good governance

The terms governance and good governance are being increasingly used in development literature. Governance describes the process of decision-making and the process by which decisions are implemented (or not implemented).

Good governance defines an ideal which is nearly impossible or difficult to achieve in its totality. However, to ensure sustainable human development, actions must be taken to work towards this ideal. Major donors and international financial institutions, like the IMF or World Bank, are emphasisizing good governance.

  • Good governance and the Arab states

Good governance is one of the cornerstones of economic and social development. The launch, under the patronage of His Majesty King Abdullah, of the Dead Sea Conference on “Good Governance for Development in the Arab countries” on Feb. 6, 2005, was both a historic moment and a dramatic demonstration of the determination of Arab governments to work together on fundamental measures to raise living standards in the Arab world.

  • IN: AI, IoT & urban governance: Moving from smart cities to intelligent cities

India’s cities are generating more data than ever before. From traffic signals and water meters to surveillance systems and citizen service platforms, urban environments are now dense networks of connected systems. Yet, connectivity alone does not create better cities.

The next phase of India’s urban transformation is about intelligence, how cities use artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) together to interpret data, make decisions and deliver services that are faster, fairer and more responsive to citizens’ needs.

  • IN: Nagaland: Kohima: Government servant should ensure to deliver good governance to public

A workshop on good governance practices and initiatives in the district was held at DC's Conference Hall Kohima on December 22.

Deputy Commissioner Kohima, Shanavas C IAS, speaking in his inaugural address, stated that good governance is celebrated on December 25th every year in honour of the former Prime Minister of India Atal Bihari Vajpayee's birthday.

  • PH: Batangas: Lipa City, DOST team up for smart governance

The local government of Lipa City in Batangas province is gearing up to enhance governance through a strategic alignment with the Department of Science and Technology in Region 4A (DOST-Calabarzon).

DOST-4A Regional Director Emelita Bagsit and Lipa City Mayor Eric Africa have formalized their commitments to implement the Innovation, Science, and Technology for Accelerating Regional Technology-Based Development (iSTART) and Smart and Sustainable Communities (SSC) programs.

  • PH: The importance of cities and good urban governance

As centers of commerce, growth and innovation, cities play a crucial role in driving not only national but also global economic progress. They contribute more than 80 percent of global GDP.

Since cities provide more and better economic opportunities as well as better access to key services than in rural areas, people are naturally drawn to cities.

  • Smart cities share stories of digital governance

Digital governance is a trend, not a choice, in solving common problems of urban development such as aging populations, and of improving efficiency to benefit people in these changing times, experts said at a recent forum.

Many countries have introduced digital tools like big data and artificial intelligence in the creation of smart cities, and significant achievements have been made in fields such as agriculture, education and industry.

  • South Korea: UN Good Governance School Planned for Seoul

Undaunted by its own recent hiccups in the area, the UN is opening a Governance Center in Seoul early next year to teach leaders from all over the world how to ensure greater civic participation and transparency.

Korea’s Minister of Government Administration and Home Affairs Oh Young-kyo met with UN Undersecretary-General Jose Antonio Ocampo on Tuesday and agreed to set up the center here as soon as possible. The government is considering shouldering half the cost.

  • Technology and sustainability are now inseparable in public governance

Public administration is undergoing one of its most significant transformations in decades as digital technologies and sustainability agendas converge. What began as efforts to automate paperwork and speed up services has evolved into a broader rethinking of how governments create public value. Digital systems are now influencing policy design, accountability structures, and collaboration between public institutions, private actors, and citizens.

A new study Technological Innovation and Sustainability in Public Administration: A Systematic Review and Research Agenda, published in Administrative Sciences, documents this change. Based on a large-scale review of international research, the study shows that digital transformation is increasingly tied to sustainability outcomes. It highlights a move toward governance models where technology supports long-term environmental, social, and institutional goals rather than short-term administrative gains.

  • UN advocating for e-governance

The United Nations is advocating for the adoption of online governance strategies for efficient and effective administrative structures.

This, the UN says, will help spur socio-economic growth and development in sub-Sahara Africa.

  • What is Good Governance?

Recently the terms " governance" and "good governance" are being increasingly used in development literature. Bad governance is being increasingly used as one of the root causes of all evil within our societies. Major donors and international financial institutions are increasingly basing their aid loans on the condition that reforms that ensure "good governance" are undertaken.

This article tries to explain, as simply as possible, what "governance" and "good governance" mean.
