  • Australians get health ID number on 1 July 2010

    All Australians will have a Healthcare Identifier number from tomorrow, despite the legislation surrounding the identifiers only passing late last week.

    The Department of Health and Ageing today confirmed to ZDNet Australia that everyone would be assigned an identifier by tomorrow, matching the government's original 1 July roll-out date.

    "It is planned that identifiers for individuals will be allocated within the Healthcare Identifier system (run by Medicare Australia) on 1 July 2010," the department said. "Consumers do not need to do anything for this process to occur."

  • AZ: A dozen of state organizations whose e-services in most demand among citizens defined

    The State Agency for Citizen Service & Social Innovations and the Ministry of Communications & IT are holding today in Baku the public hearings on the Draft State Program of Expansion of Public E-Services & Development of E-Government 2013-15.

    Speaking at the opening of the hearings, Agency’s chairman Inam Kerimov stated that the draft program has passed the process of inter-ministerial coordination.

  • AZ: Administrative access to e-government limited by individual ID numbers

    President Ilham Aliyev has endorsed the Regulation on portal E-Government (e-gov.az) and additional measures aimed at expanding electronic state services.

    Under the relevant order, the Cabinet Ministers is in charge to draft for two months the State Program of expansion of e-services of state bodies and e-government development for 2013-15, as well as proposals for regulation of creation of state e-systems and resources. For the same period the President should receive the requirements for web-resources, systems and services connected to e-gov.az.

  • AZ: E-signature certificates integrated into new generation ID cards

    New generation electronic ID cards will be introduced in Azerbaijan starting from September 1.

    In the new generation ID cards, which are more secure than older ones, the electronic carrier-chip has been inserted, which includes the citizen's residence, family status information, as well as the identity card owner's biometric photo and other personal data.

  • Azerbaijan speeds up works to introduce biometric passports

    A project is being developed in Azerbaijan to apply biometric passports.

    The statement came from Electronic Information Center of the Communication and Information Technology Ministry.

    'The project is being considered by ministries and state agencies of the country. The work as part of the project will start after relevant rules and procedures for issuance of new generation passports are designed. The current identity cards in Azerbaijan indicate eye color, height and blood type while there are more than 30 types of biometric indicators in world practice.

  • Azerbaijani citizens to obtain ID cards via internet

    Azerbaijani citizens will be able to obtain an identity card and passport through internet shortly.

    Interior Minister, Colonel-General Ramil Usubov announced this in an interview with Azerbaijan newspaper.

    Works are under way to provide population with electronic services under the decree signed by President Ilham Aliyev, the minister said.

  • Bahrain launches central electronic ID scheme

    It will allow access to array of government services

    Manama A project that gives users a single electronic identity to access an array of government services has been launched in Bahrain.

    Its developers say users can be assured that the system is secure and will protect them from online identity theft.

    “The National Authentication Frame Work project for Accessing Electronic Service is a new initiative in Bahrain that enables individuals to access various e-services offered by both government and non-governmental entities using a single dedicated identity profile,” Shaikh Ahmad Bin Atteyatallah Al Khalifa, minister of cabinet affairs, said.

  • Bahrain: New Smart Card awareness push

    An awareness campaign to educate the public on the new Smart Card is to be launched next week. The Central Informatics Organisation (CIO) will focus the campaign on major public places and shopping malls.

    It will get underway at Seef Mall next week, according to CIO president Shaikh Ahmed bin Ateyatalla Al Khalifa.

    "Our team will demonstrate to the public how the new ID card is produced," he told the GDN.

  • Bahraini ID card for GCC residents, investors

    In line with the directives of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Prime Minister, to provide more facilities to Gulf Cooperation (GCC) residents and investors in Bahrain when conducting their transactions at various service departments, the Information and eGovernment Authority (IGA) Chief Executive Mohammed Ali AlQaed stated that it is now possible for GCC citizens, residents and investors in the Kingdom of Bahrain to issue a Bahraini identity card.

    The Chief Executive confirmed that this procedure reflects the strengthening of ties and relations with neighboring countries, and provides the opportunity to attract GCC investments and inter-exchanges.

    Bahraini identity cards will be issued for Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nationals and investors living in the kingdom.

    “The measure is endorsed on every GCC resident or investor whose residency exceeded six months during the previous year from the date of entering the Kingdom and who has an authenticated, officially recognised address,” Information and eGovernment Authority (IGA) Chief Executive Mohammad Al Qaed said.

  • Bangladesh: Voter ID card may not serve as the magic tool without ICT in place

    Although we all welcomed the caretaker government's noble intention and initiative to prepare voter ID cards for ensuring a transparent and fair election process, I would like to take a cautious and sceptical view about the desired outcome, if the associated governance process and mechanisms are not developed side by side or given a thorough consideration.

    The ad-hoc arrangement of voter ID card, and more particularly the national ID card, will fail to deliver its proper value if it is planned without keeping pace with the national ICT infrastructure and national strategy in adopting ICT in the mainstream of the government.

  • BD: $195m WB loan for nat'l ID system

    The World Bank will provide $ 195 million soft loan to establish a secure, accurate and reliable national ID system in Bangladesh.

    The credit will be disbursed under 'Identification System for Enhancing Access to Services Project'. The goal of the project is to introduce e-governance in government bodies to combat corruption and provide more efficient services.

    The Election Commission Secretariat will implement the project from July 2011 to June 2016.

  • Belgium's E-Government Electronic Identity Card Program

    Belgium's Electronic Identity (eID) initiative is helping to improve government efficiency, reduce paperwork and make interactions with Belgian citizens quicker and more secure. Currently, more than 1 million Belgians have eID cards and additional cards are being issued at a rate of 150,000 cards per month. The Belgian government estimates that by the end of 2009, 8,2 million citizens age 12 years and older will have eID cards, based on Java Card technology, allowing them to access enhanced government and enterprise services.
  • BG: Electronic identification project contracts to be signed in presence of Bulgarian PM

    In the presence of Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, Minister of Transport, Information Technology and Communication Ivaylo Moskovski is to sign the contracts about a project titled “Improvement of Administrative Services through Development of the Central Systems of the E-Government,” announced the government’s press service.

    The project is worth BGN 12 million and is implemented with the financial assistance of Administrative Capacity OP, which is co-financed by the EU.

  • BH: 95% of digital transformation for ID Card services completed

    The National Portal, bahrain.bh now provides 32 eServices for ID cards and civil records, which meets 95% of the government’s digital transformation target, said Information & eGovernment Authority (iGA) Acting Chief Executive and Deputy CE for Electronic Transformation, Dr. Zakariya Ahmed Alkhaja. The digital transformation move is in line with the vision and directives of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, and the support of the Minister of Interior, General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa.

    Al Khaja said that the digital transformation process began gradually, accelerating over the past few years to offer citizens and residents a comprehensive range of ID card and civil records eServices without the need for them to visit service centers. The number of online ID card transactions in 2021 was 361,276, from an overall total of 578,689.

  • Biometric Danish passports on their way

    The Danish government will start issuing new passports with digital photos and fingerprints starting on Oct. 1.

    The decision to introduce fingerprints in passports was made by the European Union as part of their war against terrorism, human trafficking and trade, illegal immigration and other transnational crimes.

    The new biometric passport will allow Danish citizens to travel to countries which may demand this type of passport for entry in the future.

  • Biometric ID Card Program Gets Underway in Israel

    Proponents of the new biometric identification cards insist the system is a necessity towards preventing identity theft. Opponents cite the unacceptable intrusion into the private domain as well as fears that no matter how well it is protected, it is only a matter of time until the biometric database is hacked.

    Whatever you opinion, the program began in Israel on Monday morning, Rosh Chodesh Menachem Av 5773. Despite many objections, biometric ID cards (teudat zehut) are being offered in Ashdod and Rishon L’Tzion, chosen as the test cities for the project. The project will expand to other cities in the future. During the two-year test program, citizens may opt for the new biometric option or remain with the standard identification cards used today. The biometric cards will be issued free of charge.

  • Biometric passport pics: UKPS tells public (again) to keep mouth shut on camera

    The UK Passport Service(UKPS) is reminding the public to make sure that photos supplied with their passport applications meet international requirements announced last summer for biometric identification.

    Passport photos need to meet more stringent, internationally agreed standards to enable facial recognition technology to work properly. The requirements were agreed by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) in 2003 and will enable the production of new, more secure biometric 'ePassports' as well as the use of facial recognition technology to counter passport fraud and for enhanced checks at international border controls.
