  • NG: Ministry lists achievements, stakeholders set agenda for 2013

    The Federal Ministry of Communications Technology, created by President Goodluck Jonathan barely a year ago, to fast track the development of the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in the country, has identified the increase in rural telephone penetration; development of incubation centre; new Right of Way guidelines; launch of student PC ownership scheme among others as some of its achievement in the ICT industry so far.

    Besides, stakeholders in the sector have enumerated ways of improving on the industry’s 2012 performance in 2013, with a call for a drastic resolution in tackling various impediments that hindered the expansion of broadband services in the country and poor telecommunications services.

  • NG: Ministry seeks collaboration for data protection

    The Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy has called for more collaboration in the areas of data protection and privacy assessment in the country.

    A statement by the ministry made this known during an online meeting with Data Analytics Privacy Technology Limited led by its Executive Director/Partner, Ambassador Segun Olugbile.

  • NG: Ministry to engage youths on digital skills amid COVID-19 lockdown

    The Ministry of Youth and Sports Development has launched a slew of online training initiatives and programmes to engage the youth during the COVID-19 lockdown. Through its digital skills online training, its Youth Innovation Series, Webinars and E-Sports initiatives the Youth and Sports Ministry is delivering opportunities to the youth and Nigerians.

    The IBM, in partnership with the ministry, three weeks ago started the online digital skills training with over 7,000 youth participating with the chance to get IBM badges. The new addition is the Webinars set to start next week. It will be thrice weekly webinars to further increase online interaction and study in areas of interest to the youth.

  • NG: Ministry to launch e-governance for broadband provision

    Nigerian student, others win at DStv Eutelsat awards

    To facilitate the primary goal of broadband in the country, the Ministry of Communication is set launch an e-governance strategy in two months, according to the Minister of Communication, Adebayo Shittu, at the DStv Eutelsat Star Awards held in Lagos.

    The objective of electronic or e-governance, also known as G2G, is to support and simplify governance for government, citizens and businesses. It is also meant to create the right policy and institutional frameworks, and to maximise the effectiveness of ICT initiatives within government, while also integrating organisational silos and deliver citizen services through common channels.

  • NG: Ministry, Korean Agency Train Government Officials on Digital Transformation

    Nigeria’s Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy has trained 438 civil servants from different Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) on digital transformation.

    The one-day training which held on Friday in Abuja in partnership with Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), had the theme: “Enabling Digital Government Transformation: Leadership, Training and Citizen-Centric Systems.

    Jointly authored by the GSMA and the SIA, the report, 'Mobile Identity - Unlocking the Potential of the Digital Economy', presents best practice from mobile identity implementations currently in operation around the globe.

Interestingly, human ingenuity in the area of technological developments have made the world a global village as it has brought people from different parts of the world closer with little or no difficulty.

  • NG: MTN calls for broadband policy

    MTN Nigeria Communications Ltd has called for a National Broadband Policy to serve as a roadmap for broadband penetration and service delivery in the country. Mr Akinwale Goodluck, MTN Corporate Service Executive, made the call at a capacity-building session for journalists in Abuja. Broadband are signs that use a wide range of frequencies.

    Goodluck said that lack of a broadband policy posed greater challenge to ICT services in the country. “Government also needs to articulate policies and strategies for driving broadband usage through eGovernance, eCommerce and eEconomy services. Broadband penetration is meaningless without appropriate regulatory environment which will enhance the delivery of converged services,” he said.

  • NG: MTN deepens Lagos partnership on smart city goals

    MTN Nigeria has reinforced its collaboration with the Lagos State Government to accelerate the state’s smart city ambitions, with a focus on digital infrastructure and improved service delivery.

    A key initiative in this effort is the launch of the My Lagos App, a digital platform designed to streamline public services and enhance urban living.

    The app, unveiled at an event in Lagos recently, provides residents with real-time access to transportation updates, emergency services, utility payments, business listings, and tourism information.

    Several times, when there are robberies and cars are snatched, victims of the vehicles in question don't run to the Federal Road Safety Corp to report or seek for redress, but they run to the Police.

    On the other hand, when there are such distress calls, the Police cannot run to the FRSC for immediate action, hence there is need for the Police to have its own data readily available and that can be transmitted in the heat of the moment. That is why the Police desire to have its own records to assist it in stemming the tide of car snatching and such other challenges.

    The Minister of Communication and Technology, Mrs. Omobola Johnson has thumbed up for the nation’s telecommunications industry, saying that the sector, in just ten years, has exceeded the contribution of manufacturing, banking and solid minerals put together with a total contribution of 8.2% to the nation’s gross domestic product.

    She said this at the 10th edition of Nigeria Telecoms Anniversary Award Night organized by publishers of Nigerian Telecomnews in Lagos, at the weekend.

  • NG: NACCIMA Tasks CBN on Full e-Bank Transactions

    The Nigerian Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA) has urged the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to give incentive that would encourage fully electronic, paperless transaction in banks.

    President of NACCIMA, Dr. Herbert Ajayi, who made the call in Lagos at the Association’s review of the economy said CBN should introduce other policies to make paperless transactions cheaper and attractive.

    “Bank Charges on non-cash transactions could be reviewed downwards for customers, as incentive,” he said.

  • NG: Nasarawa begins ICT capacity building training for civil servants

    Nasarawa state government has commenced state wide capacity building training on e-government on its civil servants from various ministries and MDAs in the state.

    Speaking while declaring the 1st phase of the training open Monday in Lafia, the state Governor, Abdullahi Sule said his administration is committed to ensure digitalization process of government activities.

  • NG: Nasarawa Government To Spend N447m On e-libraries, Laboratories

    The Nasarawa State Government on Monday said it has awarded contract for the construction of six e-libraries and three laboratories in the state at the cost of over N447 million.

    Dr Salisu Mohammed, Senior Special Assistant on Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to Gov. Umaru Al-Makura disclosed this during a meeting with the contractors in Lafia.

    Mohammed said the e-libraries would be located in Lafia, Doma, Akwanga, Keffi, Nasarawa and Karu.

  • NG: Nasarawa Seeks Computer Literacy for E-Governance

    The Nasarawa State Commissioner for Lands, Survey and Town Planning, Sonny Agassi, has introduced a mandatory computer literacy of staff of the ministry to drive the e-government of the present administration.

    Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura recently approved reforms in land management in the state, including the computerization of the sub-sector which has seen an ongoing project to carry out Digital Aerial Mapping (DAM) of the state and Cadastral Districts design in what is called Nasarawa Geographic Information System (NAGIS).

  • NG: Nasarawa: Gov Inaugurates Free ICT Training For Workers

    Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State yesterday, inaugurated a three months training on Information Communication Technology (ICT) for workers to enhance e-governance in the state.

    Sule, while inaugurating the training in Lafia, noted that it had become imperative in order for the state to be in tune with global best practice.

  • NG: Nation Must Start Using ICT in Health

    Health minister Onybeuchi Chukwu says Nigeria must begin deploying information and communication technology (ICT) in health delivery but insists it must be driven by "a policy that's coherent, but more importantly implementable."

    A national conference looking at deploying information and communication technology has opened in Abuja.

    Declaring it open, the minister said stakeholders must galvanise "action toward ensuring ICT is employed in the best manner that will help to drive the health sector toward" targets set in the National Health Development Plan.

  • NG: National Assembly to Introduce E-Parliament

    The National Assembly has promised to introduce electronic parliament or E-Parliament in the year, 2021 to meet with international global best practices.

    This was made known by clerk of the National Assembly, Mr. Ojo Olatunde Amos during the retreat organized by the National Assembly management, in Abuja.

  • NG: National ICT Strategic Plan Due for Review Next Year

    Nigeria’s five-year National ICT Strategic Plan from 2010 to 2015, which was launched in 2010, is due for review next year, the Director-General, National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Mr. Peter Jack has said.

    Jack said the five-year plan would be reviewed to find out the success rate of its implementation, with a view to improving on it.

    However, he admitted that the implementation of the plan in sectors such as Education, Agriculture, Health, Human Capital Development, Governance, Judiciary and National Security among others, actually propelled development in the country's ICT sector in the last four years.

  • NG: National Identity Management Commission launches ID card harmonisation policy

    Director-General of National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, Bar. Chris Onyemenam has presented harmonization policy that will provide unique identification card for Nigerians and legal residents in the country.

    Speaking at a stakeholders’ workshop on Biometrics, Demographics Data Standards and Verification Procedures for the National Identity Management system in Abuja, Onyemenam said the harmonization was to avoid duplication of work by government agencies and ensure optimum use of resources by the government in service delivery.
