  • IN: Uttar Pradesh govt clears ₹8.99 cr for 1,338 CCTV cameras in 57 districts

    A senior home department official said the administrative and financial approval was issued by the home (police) department on February 11, following a proposal from the Uttar Pradesh Police headquarters. The project targets districts not covered under existing smart city and integrated traffic management systems, aiming to strengthen traffic regulation, surveillance, and enforcement of road safety norms.

    The Uttar Pradesh government has sanctioned ₹8.99 crore for installing 1,338 CCTV cameras and related equipment at 297 major intersections in 57 districts to improve traffic management and road safety.

    In a first, Lucknow will get artificial intelligence-enabled camera surveillance for the safety of citizens.

    A total of 1,000 AI cameras equipped with face recognition technology have been installed at key locations across the city.

    Municipal Commissioner and CEO of Smart City Lucknow, Inderjit Singh, said: "As part of the Safe City project, these CCTV cameras have been placed strategically and will capture suspicious movement of persons by scanning faces against police database and alert control rooms in case of any criminal activity."

    The district administration claims to be committed to the Chief Minister’s pledge of public safety. District Magistrate and CEO of Smart City Ltd, Savin Bansal, upon assuming charge, had conducted thorough review meetings of the CCTV cameras installed for public safety in the city, resulting in the activation of previously inactive cameras.

    In the past one month, 60 cameras, including those at Mussoorie Diversion and Sai Mandir, along Rajpur Road and other key locations, have been activated. This proved instrumental in assisting the police to track down a car involved in a hit-and-run incident yesterday.

  • India plans to develop its own computer OS

    India plans to develop a new computer operating system, with an eye to enhancing the security of its computer systems, a government spokesman said on Monday.

    The new operating system is being developed by the country's Defence Research & Development Organization (DRDO), Ravi Kumar Gupta, a spokesman for the DRDO, said.

    The DRDO is a wing of the country's Ministry of Defence, and has about 50 laboratories specialized in developing technologies in a number of areas including aeronautics, armaments, electronics, combat vehicles, engineering systems, instrumentation, missiles, advanced computing and simulation, special materials, naval systems, life sciences, training, information systems and agriculture.

    In view of the security threats, especially in the wake of the recent terrorist attacks in Mumbai, and as per the instructions of Government of India, the Cochin Port Trust has taken a series of measures to strengthen security.

    As part of these security measures, it was decided to introduce a biometric identity card system for access control into the port. All employees of the port, port users as well as visitors are required to swipe the card at the entry gates at the time of entry and exit.

  • India: Tamil Nadu to announce an Information Security Policy for the State

    Speaking at the CII conference on Cyber Security. “Emerging Cyber Threats and Challenges”, (Chennai, 24th April 2010) the IT Secretary of Tamil Sri P W C Davidar stated that Tamil Nadu would be coming out with an Information Security Policy for the State by the end of May. The policy would take the best corporate practices but customize it to the requirements of the Government.

    Mr Davidar has been in the news recently for having pronounced a land mark judgement in a Phishing Case holding ICICI Bank liable to pay a compensation of Rs 12.85 lakhs to the victim.

  • India: Tamil Nadu: Information security policy by May-end

    Tamil Nadu’s policy on information security would be unveiled by May-end, Information Technology secretary PWC Davidar said on Saturday.

    Delivering the keynote address at a conference here on ‘Emerging Cyber Threats and Challenges’, Davidar said, “The State government was working on it for more than a year. The policy would secure the information network of government departments.”

  • India: Tamil Nadu: State to unveil e-security policy soon

    Tamil Nadu will soon come out with an e-security policy as a concomitant of its e-governance initiatives, IT Minister Poongothai Aladi Aruna said on Tuesday.

    Inaugurating the two-day “CeTIT 2010” (Citizens Empowerment Through IT) conference-cum-exhibition, organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), ELCOT, and the Tamil Nadu e-Governance Agency (TNeGA), Dr. Poongothai said strengthening the security of data exchange and implementation of clear rules for integration of complex government systems were the key challenges, as the government gave final shape to its e-governance policy.

  • India: Time bound police verification of passport applicants: ARC

    A high-powered government committee has recommended that police verification required for issuance of passports should be made time bound to make the system speedy.

    "The entire passport issue process needs to be put on an e-Governance mode in phases," the second Administrative Reforms Commission (ARC) said in its 11th report released today by M Veerappa Moily, who heads the panel.

  • India’s top law enforcement agency to set up cybercrime center

    India’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is teaming up with the country’s National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM) to establish a cybercrime center.

    Under a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed Monday, the CBI will work with Indian law enforcement agencies and industry to set up the Cyber and Hi-Tech Crime Investigation and Training Center (CHCIT) for combating cybercrime.

    The cyber crime center will be used as a platform to expand cooperation between law enforcement and industry in the areas of sharing information on emerging threats and technologies, security standards, best practices, new challenges from cybercriminals, and improved cybercrime investigation and computer forensics.

In zwei Forschungszentren der Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) sollen zunächst 50 Informatiker an der Entwicklung arbeiten, berichtet The Hindu. "Ein eigenes Betriebssystem wird uns helfen, Hackerangriffe auf unsere Systeme zu verhindern", sagt V.K. Saraswat, wissenschaftlicher Berater des indischen Verteidigungsministeriums. Damit soll nicht zuletzt Datenspionage vorgebeugt werden.

  • Infineon gains inside track in German IT security initiative

    Infineon Technologies AG said this week (June 30) it has signed an agreement with the German Federal Ministry of the Interior (Bundesministerium des Inneren) for close future cooperation on IT security.

    According to the Munich-based chip maker, the agreement covers "a close information exchange" in three security areas: smart card technology, future mobile applications, and security components needed to increase the trustworthiness of personal computers and computer networks.
