  • KE: Corporates line up for ICT City Konza

    Local corporates are increasingly showing interest to invest in the proposed ICT city, Konza, whose ground breaking is expected by April this year. The companies eying to lease part of the 5000 acres land for development include mobile operator Safaricom, IT solutions providers Seven Seas Technologies (SST), Express Automation,Computer Pride, mortgage financier Housing Finance and Chandaria Group of companies.

    Other orgarnisations that have expressed intention to set up are Tea Board of Kenya, Nairobi Hospital, University Of Nairobi and The South Eastern University College (SEUCO). The ministry of Information and Communication has embarked on an awareness campaign to get more local and international companies and investment groups on board the Konza City development.

  • KH: Phnom Penh: City Hall launches bus app

    In a bid to improve public transportation services, City Hall on Friday launched an app that enables travellers to track the location of city buses.

    In a press release, City Hall said it cooperated with JICA to install GPS on buses for the City Bus app, which was created by ITSMO, enabling travellers to locate buses as well as estimate the time of arrival of a bus at a designated stop.

    Researchers Find Multiple Smart Components Of The Modern City Vulnerable To Cyber-Attacks

    Kaspersky Lab researchers examined a number of digital kiosks and interactive terminals used in modern cities for different purposes – from paying for different services through to entertainment – and discovered that a lot of them contain vulnerabilities that can expose private user data and be used to spy or spread malicious code. Along with kiosks, specialists researched speed cameras used in cities and their supporting infrastructure. As a result, they discovered that malicious users could easily access these cameras and manipulate the data collected.

  • KR: Busan City, Amazon Web Services sign a pact to develop smart city Initiatives

    Busan Metropolitan City and Amazon Web Services (AWS) signed an agreement on July 25 at Busan Cloud Innovation Center to develop smart city initiatives and strengthen innovation in the public sector.

    The agreement is aimed at strengthening mutual cooperation based on the success of the startup initiative made through a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed between the city of Busan and AWS in March 2016.

  • KR: “Smart Seoul 2015” vision announced

    The Seoul Metropolitan Government formally announced its IT blueprint aptly called the “Smart Seoul 2015”, which details the South Korean capital’s vision for informatisation for the next five years.

    The Smart Seoul 2015 incorporates IT services into government administration, citizen health and welfare, and industry and living. Seoul citizens will be able to use free wireless internet at public facilities across the city, including public offices and community centres, from as early as 2015.

    Mayor Oh Se-hoon said, “The miracle of IT, which has developed alarmingly fast over the past twenty or more years, will be upgraded once more through Smart Seoul,” adding, “Seoul City will continue to maintain its stature as the World’s Best IT City, and as a Convenient State-of-the-art City where IT streams into every aspect of citizens’ daily life.”

    The system dynamically activates more cameras during busy times and fewer during quiet periods, optimizing the use of resources and improving road safety. The system was tested in a range of situations and shows the potential to reduce accidents, ease congestion and conserve energy.

    Legal experts and public officials from around Asia will come to Korea for the annual Asian Legislative Experts Symposium (ALES), held at The Plaza Seoul hotel on Oct. 30, to discuss legislative issues in "smart city" projects, according to the Ministry of Government Legislation, Sunday.

    Co-hosted by the ministry and the Korea Legislation Research Institute, the conference provides a platform for Asian countries to share their legislative expertise and experience.

    The Information Professional Association of Korea (IPAK) held a breakfast seminar on July 11st at the JW Marriot Hotel in Seoul. Bong-Ha Rha, director general for information cooperation of Korea Communications Commission (KCC) spoke on ‘ICT development strategy in the smart era’.

    Director Rha said “In the smart era, where information can freely transcend national boundaries with the development of information technology, we need to ponder how to prepare for the next generation. For the last twenty years, information technology has been the driving force behind the Korean economy. During this period, the growth rate of IT industry has shown a 13.4 percent increase, demonstrating how the industry has created added value to the economy, considering the GDP growth rate for the same period was a meager 4.7 percent. Today, Korea boasts of leading various IT markets, capturing 27.5 percent of the cell phone market, 37.8 percent of TV, 51.7 percent of memory, and 52.9 percent of display panel market shares. Without information technology, the Korean economy would not have been able to grow as it is now. Even in the network sector, although Korean companies were not initially successful at commercialization of WiBro despite being the first country to do so, they adopted LTE early this time and have succeeded in launching the world’s first nationwide network.”

    KT will build a smart community in Australia in cooperation with a local partner and Seoul National University using its information technology, Korea's No. 2 mobile carrier announced, Sunday.

    The telecommunication firm said it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Seoul National University's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and Australia's Smart Community Consortium (SSC) at KT's headquarters in Gwanghwamun, central Seoul, Thursday.

  • KR: Mayor Unveils Plan to Transform Seoul into ‘Smart’ City

    The Seoul Metropolitan Government said Wednesday it will install 50,000 Internet of Things (IoT) smart sensors throughout the capital city by 2022 to collect information on fine dust, traffic and other things related to citizens’ lives.

    The Seoul government will also introduce chatbots to its 120 Dasan Call Center service, a civil complaints hotline, this year, as well as a shared parking system in which smartphone users can check availability at public parking lots.

  • KR: Seoul Government Plans $100 Million Investment into Blockchain to Build a Smart City

    During his nine-day-long visit to Europe, Park Won-soon, mayor of Seoul, revealed that the South Korean capital is planning to implement blockchain technology across a number of key areas in the city’s government over the next five years.

    The Blockchain Urban Plan will see the technology added to 14 public services in the city. The budget for the plan stands at estimaded 123 billion Korean won ($108 million). Services that will see blockchain introduction include voting, labor welfare certification issuance, etc.

    “Seoul City is pushing for ‘Smart Seoul 2015’ for the qualitative happiness of its citizens from 2011 to 2015,” says Dr. Hwang Jong-sung, Assistant Mayor for Information Technology (CIO) of Seoul Metropolitan government. “Seoul’s budget for informatization in 2011 stood at 129,501 million won, accounting for 0.63% of Seoul’s total budget. The Seoul e-government consists of a front office, a back office and additional infrastructure.

    The e-Seoul Net is an exclusive high-speed information and telecommunication network which links the Main Building of Seoul City Hall, its branch offices, affiliated organizations and Gu (district) offices with an aim toward realizing an e-government. u-Seoul Net is a telecommunication network that offers audio-visual and Internet (data) services such as traffic and CCTV information. The core of Seoul’s informatization project in the future is to carry out the Smart Seoul 2015 project.
