Denmark tops the 2015 Digital Economy and Society Index, excelling in eHealth, eGovernment and eCommerce.

Denmark is generally far above EU average in the Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI) and is the best performing country in two out of five sub-indices; Digital Public Services and Integration of Digital Technology.

Within Digital Public Services, Denmark's performance in eHealth is the best in the EU. 92% of general practitioners exchange medical data electronically (1st) and use of ePrescription is widespread with nearly 100% of its general practitioners transferring prescriptions to pharmacists electronically.

Denmark also has the highest percentage of eGovernment users in the EU with 69% of Internet users sending return filled forms online to the public authorities.

Danish businesses take fully advantage of the possibilities offered by e-commerce. 26% of SMEs in Denmark sell online and 9.9% sell online across borders. Danish businesses make 14% of their turnover from online sales, the 3rd best performance in the EU.

High Internet penetration

The DESI also includes the sub-indices Connectivity, Human Capital and Use of Internet.

In Denmark, the Internet access is generally better than in the rest of Europe, and 75% of the population in Denmark has access to a 4G wireless connection.

The Danes’ digital skills are also well above average, and 92% of the population uses the Internet. Online banking and shopping are the most popular online activities.

The Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI) is a composite index that summarising relevant indicators on Europe’s digital performance and tracks the evolution of EU member states in digital competitiveness.

The DESI measures the five dimensions: connectivity, human capital, use of Internet, integration of digital technology and digital public services.
