Madrid is rolling out the largest intelligent waste monitoring solution ever implemented in a major city. The idea behind the program is to optimise waste collection and thus reduce waste-related issues such as air pollution, noise and traffic jams.

Slovakian startup Sensoneo, a specialist in intelligent waste management, is inaugurating its largest ever system in Madrid, in collaboration with local authorities. A total of 11,100 sensors will be progressively installed in waste receptacles, whether dedicated to light packaging, textiles, glass, organic waste or general waste. They are intended to monitor the level of waste in each bin.

By spring, its s expected that enough data will have been collected from sensors to plan optimized waste collection routes using intelligent waste management software. The aim is to reduce the amount of time spent collecting waste and, consequently, to save on fuel consumption and costs related to the process. On a long-term basis, the data-based decisions should also help reduce CO2 emissions throughout the Spanish capital, as well as reduce noise pollution and improve traffic flow.

Sensoneo has already had projects in place in many cities, such as Prague and Buenos Aires, for several years now. But the project with Madrid is of a different scale. If it proves successful, other large cities could adopt similar solutions.

This optimized waste collection management is another step in Madrid's plan to become a referential smart city. Two years ago, Angel Niño, deputy for innovation and entrepreneurship at Madrid City Hall, unveiled his view on the evolution of urban planning: “Tomorrow, the entire organisation of a city will have to be seen through the prism of artificial intelligence.”
