New transport and mobility upgrades for a greener city! Sustainability with new transport and mobility initiatives
Palma is stepping up its sustainability game with new transport and mobility initiatives aimed at reducing emissions and improving urban living. Enhanced train and metro services, eco-friendly buses, and a Low Emission Zone are key steps toward a greener future.
Palma’s green initiatives
Palma’s local government is taking bold steps to transform the city into a “Smart City” focused on sustainable mobility and environmental efficiency. The goal is to cut CO₂ emissions, improve transport infrastructure, and enhance overall sustainability.
A major part of the initiative includes strengthening the train and metro services, particularly the Sa Pobla line and the metro to the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB). Over 3,500 additional seats have been added during peak hours, targeting students and early commuters to encourage greater use of public transport.
The Balearic government has also invested €150 million in interurban transport. This includes adding 27 new buses, expanding existing routes, and extending the Aerotib service year-round, making travel more convenient and environmentally friendly.
To further reduce pollution, Palma has introduced a Low Emission Zone (LEZ), restricting high-emission vehicles and promoting cleaner alternatives. The “Palma Camina” project is another key initiative, designed to increase pedestrian areas and calm traffic, creating a more walkable and accessible city.
These measures align with Palma’s broader sustainable development goals, demonstrating a clear commitment to reducing environmental impact and improving quality of life for residents and visitors alike.
With enhanced public transport, reduced emissions, and a more pedestrian-friendly environment, Palma is setting an example for other cities aiming to balance modern urban living with sustainability.
