"Italy is not only in the forefront for the diffusion of the digital signature, but also, above all, one of the 10 objectives of legislature will be reached and surpassed, that is to have a million digital signatures by the end of the year. To date, 800 thousand devices have already been emitted." This was announced by the minister for innovation and technology, Lucio Stanca, who spoke at the Milan Chamber of Commerce meeting regarding the new computerized register for businesses, emphasizing the importance of the digital signature, with which, he stated, "paper documents will vanish, processes will be quicker, it allows for a reduction in the risk of not receiving documents, and furthermore reduces costs (paper, shipment, archiving), with savings of 260 million euros per year estimated by Carlo Sangalli. At the same time, for public administration, the digital signature is an instrument of efficacy to knock down bureaucracy and the transmission of paper documents, while for the private sector it is also a central instrument for the development of e-business." Dwelling upon the subject of the computerized registry, Stanca emphasized how its "progressive open-mindedness towards network consultation is one of the most striking products of the e-government, as it allows for the transfer in digital format of the majority of information collected and managed by public administration. It is a matter of informative assets with an exceptional value not only for the innovation of public service, but also for the national economic activity as a whole." Stanca also emphasized that on the e-government front in Italy, 134 projects have been started with regional and local government to create an "efficient federalism", bringing over 20 million citizens online and to bring over 80 public services considered "priority" to businesses. "It is the most relevant technological investment," the minister emphasized, "that has ever been achieved for such a value (492 million euros, 120 of which are being co-financed by the minister for innovation and technology), for capillarity and for its extent. Furthermore, the European competition for the best practice of e-government has brought over 13 Italian projects, listed among the 65 best among those presented by 20 European countries in preparation for the European Conference on e-government, which I promoted in Como for July 7 and 8 in with some forty foreign delegations, confirming that Italy is the most dynamic European workshop for new applications of e-government."
