Transforming Government since 2001
College students who want to get a jump on the tax season this year can file online for free with the TaxExpress service available through the state's official Web site at www.Utah.gov.

Thanks to a number of recent improvements, Utah's TaxExpress Internet-based filing service for individual state income tax returns is now available to approximately half of the state's population, including college students.

TaxExpress is among the easiest ways for college students to file their income tax returns, and the online service is available 24 hours a day and seven days a week. To be eligible to use the online system, filers must meet the following requirements:

  • Federally adjusted annual gross income of $100,000 or less

  • Full-year Utah residency in 2005 (for both filers if married and filing jointly)

  • Claiming only the standard deduction on the federal form

  • Have 10 or fewer W-2 and/or 1099 forms showing Utah withholding taxes. Out-of-state withholding forms are not allowed.

Refunds through the TaxExpress system are generally processed faster than other filing methods, and refunds usually arrive in a matter of days rather than weeks. For added convenience, TaxExpress filers also have the option to receive income tax refund deposits directly into checking, savings, or credit union accounts.

TaxExpress is also available for those who owe income taxes. Payments by MasterCard, American Express, Discover, or electronic check are accepted through Utah.gov's secure payment system and can also be mailed with the coupon included in the 2005 TaxExpress booklet.
