Transforming Government since 2001
As the tax filing deadline approaches, many taxpayers will find themselves rushing to the post office to avoid penalties. Now there is an easy alternative, thanks to a new online tax extension request service offered through Alabama's official Web site at www.alabama.gov. The Alabama Department of Revenue's new service automates extension requests, which will run for six months this year. Last year, taxpayers were required to file for a two-month and then a four-month extension separately.

Also new for 2006 is the Alabama's online tax estimation service. The tax estimation system allows citizens and businesses who are required to file and pay estimated tax for the 2006 fiscal year to schedule payments to occur on dates that are specified by the taxpayer. Taxpayers cannot use the online estimation application to pay a tax liability, billing notice, or assessment.

"These online tax applications are an example of the efficiencies and conveniences that we are dedicated to creating for the citizens and businesses of Alabama," says Tom Surtees, Alabama Commissioner of Revenue. "We recognize that advances in technology will help us to fulfill our mission to efficiently and effectively administer the revenue laws in an equitable, courteous, and professional manner."

The online tax extension and tax estimation applications are currently available and are provided at no charge to taxpayers.
