First electricity...next the telephone...now the government wants to help bring the Internet to rural areas.
North Augusta is one area chosen for the project. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has partnered with Open Range Communications, providing a loan that will help supply broadband Internet access to rural areas. People living in North Augusta have mixed feelings about the project.
Judy Frasure, Sunrise Grill Manager, North Augusta, SC: "It very well could be abused, unless there's a minimum put on it, a maximum, a limit on how they're allowed to stay in one location."
Reggie Williams, North Augusta, SC: "I know a lot of people that don't get Internet service because they live so back in the woods, so that's a really good idea."
Five-hundred-eighteen communities have been chosen, nationwide, for the project. It could be five years before all areas have been set up with broadband Internet.
