A new law in Wyoming gives the state's rural health office the authority to work with other states and organizations to expand use of telemedicine, the Casper Star Tribune reports.

According to Rex Gantenbein, director of the Center for Rural Health Research and Education at the University of Wyoming, increased funding for and interest in telemedicine have resulted in most of the state's hospitals having some telehealth capacity.

In 2007, a $500,000 telehealth program connected 24 of Wyoming's 26 acute care hospitals with video conferencing technology.

Physicians said the next step would be treating patients remotely on a wider scale, as well as treating patients across state lines.

Wyoming Department of Health's James Bush, who is helping develop a comprehensive telemedicine network in the state, said that new rules enacted by the Wyoming Board of Medicine aim to make it simpler for out-of-state physicians to get licenses to practice telemedicine. Bush added that he hopes medical officials in all states will agree to accept other states' medical licenses to some degree to permit wider use of telemedicine.
