Transforming Government since 2001
For the seventh consecutive year, Alabama’s official state Web site (www.alabama.gov) has been ranked among the top ten in the Center for Digital Government’s annual Best of Web competition for government portal excellence. This year, Alabama.gov was ranked third in the nation among Web sites, the highest ranking since the site’s inception.

“We’ve used the Internet to make government more transparent and accessible to the citizens it serves,” said Gov. Bob Riley. “Alabama continues to be a recognized leader in digital government.”

The 2010 Best of the Web competition recognizes the most innovative and user-friendly state Web portals and was conducted by the Center for Digital Government, a national research and advisory institute on information technology policies and best practices in state and local government. Sites are judged on delivery of public services, efficiency, economy and functionality for improved citizen access. Representatives from the Center for Digital Government and officials from the 2009 Best of the Web-winning state and local governments served as judges for this year’s competition.

Cathilea Robinett, executive director of the Center for Digital Government, congratulated the winners of the annual Best of the Web competition saying, “The winners’ innovative use of the Internet to continue delivering citizen services despite tight fiscal constraints is inspiring. This skilled use of the Web embodies the spirit of the Best of the Web awards and provides examples to state and local government leaders around the country on how to bring quality services to their citizens while containing costs.”

Alabama.gov offers a variety of government-related services and information 24 hours a day and seven days a week. The site provides numerous online resources to Alabamians, including information on living and working in Alabama, professional license renewals, up-to-date state agency contacts, and interactive maps. The portal also provides more than 160 interactive services which allow users to complete entire personal and business transactions online. Since January 2010 over 1.1 million users have visited www.alabama.gov.

The Alabama.gov portal is developed and managed at no cost to the state and is the result of a unique public-private partnership between the Alabama Department of Finance and Alabama Interactive, the state of Alabama’s partner for online government services.
