Maine.gov, the State of Maine’s official web portal, has been selected by Government Computer News magazine as one of the Top 10 public sector websites. This year’s criteria focused heavily on information transparency and open government as well as data visualization, search and social media. Maine.gov (www.maine.gov) was one of only two state government sites to make the Top 10 list this year.
“Having a website that is informative and easy to use is the key to ensuring Mainers know what’s going on at all times in state government,” said Governor LePage. “We should be proud to be on this list.”
The award highlighted the open government features on Maine.gov, such as the improved tracking of economic stimulus funds through Maine.gov DataShare, a part of the Maine Recovery Act (ARRA) Electronic Reporting Solution. DataShare, an online open data catalog, continues to expand and encourages public participation and collaboration in government.
Maine’s online Media Gallery was another noted feature, providing public access to state agency video and audio. For example, the Media Gallery includes a video to help deaf or hard-of-hearing citizens use the services of statewide Career Centers, by presenting the information via a sign language interpreter and subtitles.
In 2010, Maine.gov received six national awards from a variety of organizations. These awards demonstrate the commitment of the State of Maine to bring useful, effective online services to the citizens of Maine. These awards include:
- Maine.gov was ranked fourth in Best of the Web, for state government web portals by The Center for Digital Government. This is the tenth year that Maine’s official website has been named one of the top 4 state government sites.
- The Center for Digital Government recognized Maine.gov for the Maine TankSmart application, which received an award in the government-to-business category. TankSmart is a free online service that provides training and certification for operators of underground oil storage facilities.
- The Center for Digital Government recognized Maine.gov for the Maine Electronic ARRA (American Recovery and Reinvestment Act) Reporting Solution, which received an award in the government-to-government category.
The “Sunny Award”, presented by the editors of Sunshine Review, recognized Maine.gov as one of the most transparent government websites in America. Maine.gov was among 41 out of 5,000 government websites to earn an "A" transparency grade.
