Indiana Department of Natural Resources offers recreationalists easy-to-use, award-winning free iPhone application

Since IN.gov launched its first iPhone application with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) back in March 2011, the iPhone application has been downloaded more than 11,000 times and received several honors as a 2011 Silver Award Winner from W3 and The International Davey Awards in the categories of Sports and Recreation and Travel. The Indiana DNR app is a first-of-its-kind that is provided and endorsed by the DNR and is available for free download at itunes.apple.com/us/app/indiana-dnr/id395591679?mt=8.

"We live in an increasingly mobile society in which people have a variety of ways to gather the information they need. This new iPhone application adds another tool to our tool box in DNR's continuous effort to stay connected with our customers,” said Phil Bloom, Director of Communications, Indiana Department of Natural Resources. “We're doing Facebook. We're doing Twitter. And now when people ask about state parks and other DNR properties, we can say we've got an app for that, too.”

The Indiana DNR iPhone application features:

Location mapping for Indiana State Parks, where to hunt or fish, and additional state properties Distances to park or fishing/hunting areas in relation to current location Fees and regulations for all state properties and outdoor recreational sites Links to camping or state inn reservations sites Links to fishing or hunting license purchasing sites Reserved hunt registration Nature brochures and Indiana fishing species guide RSS feeds of Indiana DNR news Links to Indiana DNR Web sites

In addition to the many fish and wildlife areas, forests, historic sites, state park inns, and nature preserves, Indiana has 24 state parks and eight reservoirs. Approximately 15 million visitors access over 178,330 acres of state parks and reservoirs annually and the DNR iPhone app provides all the information needed when planning an outdoor activity at one of these sites.

IN.gov also offers more than 75 mobile Web sites (www.mobile.IN.gov) and continues to utilize mobile device technologies in an effort to meet customer demands and enhance Hoosiers’ experiences.

“The relevance of native Smartphone applications is rapidly increasing and difficult to overlook,” said Robert Paglia, Director of IN.gov. “We are very excited to announce another medium for our constituents’ continued interaction with their government. The State of Indiana remains at the forefront of this evolution and has several additional initiatives targeted for launch this year utilizing native Smartphone and tablet technologies.”
