The Tramway becomes the first non-MTA operated entity to adopt OMNY payments and fare capping, bringing a more modern transit experience to passengers.

The Roosevelt Island Tramway has officially introduced the OMNY tap-and-go fare payment system, allowing riders to use their smart devices or contactless payment cards for a faster, more convenient transit experience. The launch marks a significant milestone as the tramway becomes the first non-MTA-operated service to implement OMNY, with payment stations at 59th St. and 2nd Ave in Manhattan and Tramway Plaza on Roosevelt Island.

Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC) President and CEO, Right Shelton J. Haynes celebrated the introduction, emphasising the importance of modernising transit systems. “More and more Island travellers are turning to OMNY for their everyday transit use, and as the world becomes increasingly digital, it’s important for our infrastructure to keep pace with those changing trends,” said Haynes. He also acknowledged the collaboration with the MTA and the efforts of his legal team in making the project a reality.

MTA Chair and CEO, Janno Lieber highlighted OMNY’s rapid adoption, noting that “tap-and-go is being adopted at warp speed by subway and bus riders and we need to give that option to everyone who uses any type of transit.”

The OMNY system offers fare capping, where customers pay $2.90 for their first eleven rides within seven days, after which fares drop to $2.10, and from the 13th ride onwards, the remaining rides are free for that period, ensuring no one spends more than $34 in a week. This initiative brings a new level of convenience to both residents and visitors using the tram. The Roosevelt Island Tramway operates every 7 to 15 minutes, providing direct trips between Roosevelt Island and Manhattan.

The Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC) was created in 1984 by the State of New York as a public benefit corporation with a mission to plan, design, develop, operate, and maintain Roosevelt Island. With a focus on innovative and environmentally friendly solutions, RIOC is committed to providing services that enhance the island’s residential community. RIOC manages the two-mile-long island’s roads, parks, buildings, a sports facility, and public transportation, including the iconic aerial tramway. Additionally, RIOC operates a Public Safety Department that helps maintain a safe and secure environment for residents, employees, business owners, and visitors.
