Communication and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek noted there was strong evidence that big data could play a big economic role not only in private commerce but also national economies.
"However, companies, organisations and policy makers are facing considerable challenges to capture the full potential of big data with people everywhere talking about the shortage of analytical and managerial talent necessary to make the most of big data," he said.
He said this when addressing the Digital Lifestyle Malaysia 2013 show at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre here Saturday. The event was opened by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
Elaborating, he said: "All this data is like a potential gold mine but like a gold mine, you only have a little gold and a lot more of everything else. That would be the challenge."
The minister observed that many pioneering companies were already using big data to create value.
"Companies without access to big data seem to lose the ability to compete," he added.
