Transforming Government since 2001
ICT services and e-commerce will push goal of Digital Malaysia, says PM

THE government expects information and communications technology services and electronic-commerce (e-commerce) to be the largest contributors to Malaysia's digital economy, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

The sectors, he added, would push the goal of digital economy initiative, Digital Malaysia, to contribute 17 per cent to the country's gross domestic product.

He said Digital Malaysia, launched in July last year, would address holistically four pilot applications for societal and governmental purposes, and a fund for big data analytics (BDA) to drive ICT services.

"Multimedia Development Corporation Sdn Bhd (MDeC) will kick-start the private sector involvement in the BDA project with a RM10 million budget to create 20 applications for the business community," he after chairing the 25th MSC Malaysia Implementation Council meeting here yesterday.

Najib said the Communication and Multimedia Ministry, with the collaboration of the Malaysian Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning Unit and MDeC, would implement four government-initiated BDA pilot projects by 2015.

As for e-commerce, he said projects were in the pipeline for small-and medium-sized industries (SMEs) to increase their exports by capitalising on global demand in e-markets.

For example, e-trade will help 25,000 SMEs to reach out to global buyers in seven economies and five international e-markets by 2020.

Earlier, Najib said the new Digital Malaysia 354 Roadmap must be implemented to game-change Malaysia's digital landscape by addressing access, adoption and use across five digital economy sub-sectors that would impact four Digital Malaysia communities.

He said this would spur growth and change in the digital landscape for five key digital economy sub-sectors, namely ICT services, e-commerce, ICT manufacturing, ICT trade as well as content and media.

"These five sub-sectors are required to grow at a compound annual rate of 9.8 per cent from 2010 to 2020."

Najib praised the competence of MSC Malaysia companies to impact the local and international technology landscapes.

He said MSC Malaysia recorded its highest revenue at RM33.53 billion last year, up 5.7 per cent from 2011. The company also drew RM2.92 billion in investments, a 17 per cent increase from the previous year.

Meanwhile, Najib received a courtesy call from United States Treasury Secretary Jack Lew, who is on a five-nation swing through Asia this week, at Parliament.

Lew will also visit Japan, Singapore, Vietnam and China to hold talks on the US and regional economic outlook.
