UUM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohamed Mustafa Ishak said the varsity intends to extend its WiFi coverage to the varsity’s surrounding areas so as to reduce the digital divide that exists.
They also hope to assist the state government in developing ICT knowledge advancement projects for communities in and around the Sintok Valley.
“If everyone has access to the Internet, the digital divide between rural and urban communities can be indirectly reduced... a larger portion of the community will become more advanced in education and business fields,” he said.
The varsity is also committed to developing a Science Park project with the state government.
Prof Mohamed Mustafa was speaking at a ceremony where UUM presented computer certificates to 18 recipients from various groups who recently received laptops from the varsity.
The varsity had donated 380 computers through its subsidiary, UUM R&D Serindit Com Sdn Bhd, to various non-governmental organisations, individuals, organi-sations, schools and associations.
The computer certificates were presented to the recipients by Kedah executive council member and Kedah Science, Innovation, Information Technology, Communications and High-Technology chairperson Datin Norsabrina Mohd Noor.
Meanwhile, Datuk Abdul Rahman Ibrahim who is Serindit board of directors chairman, said the presentation of the computers is part of UUM’s corporate social responsibility.
“We hope this programme will help us improve and advance knowledge about IT and its importance,” he said.
Norsabrina agreed, saying that the presentation of the computers was the beginning of many more collaborations between the state government and UUM in the ICT field.
“With this partnership, we will set up a centre called Digital Centre at the Urban Transformation Centre in Alor Setar, that will serve as a point of reference on all matters pertaining to ICT,” she said.
