Thanks to an agreement with Huawei Malaysia, the university will be equipped with a high-quality, high-bandwith and high-reliability campus network.
“Smart campuses with reliable, high bandwith networks are essential tools for today’s digital natives to feel engaged in their university education and compete successfully in the digital economy,” said Huawei Malaysia chief executive officer Abraham Liu at the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on Wednesday.
As a leading global ICT solutions provider, Huawei Malaysia has contributed significantly to raising the bar for ICT human capital development in Malaysia and this venture was no exception, Liu said.
Also present were Xiamen University president president Zhu Chongshi, XMU vice-president Wang Ruifang, People’s Republic of China Embassy culture office director Gao Wei and Huawei Southern Pacific Region president David Wei.
The company trains 20,000 engineers annually at its global training centers in Cyberjaya and also facilitates ICT training for over 8,000 teachers and students at training labs built in eight Malaysian universities. At Universiti Malaya last year, a semester-long challenge was held where students had to independently run and manage the Huawei device store on campus – the first of its kind in the country.
Most recently, in December, the Seeds for the Future initiative was launched for Malaysian students in the electronic engineering and computer science fields. Under the initiative, 16 students will be fully sponsored to go on a two-week study trip to Beijing, Shanghai and Huawei’s headquarters in Shenzhen.
The partnership with XMUMC will also see a joint teaching laboratory on campus.
“The laboratory will offer the latest and best of Huawei technology to students,” said Zhu.
Located on a 60.7ha site in Salak Tinggi, Sepang, it aims to cater to 10,000 students when fully operational and will provide on-campus accommodation to all enrolled students.
The groundbreaking ceremony was officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak in July last year.
“As a start, we will be focusing on our Bachelor degrees initially, but will be offering programmes up to the doctoral level,” said Prof Wang Ruifang, who signed the agreement with Liu.
Academic programmes will be offered under five schools: Medicine, Information Science and Technology, Ocean and Environment, Ecomomics and Management, and Chinese Language and Culture. The language of instructon will be English, said Prof Wang, with the exception of some Chinese Studies and Chinese Traditional Medicine courses.
Tan Sri Ong Ka Ting, the Prime Minister’s special envoy to China, said in a statement on Thursday that the campus was expected to be up and running by the end of the year.
He had been briefed by Xiamen University China president Zhu Chongshi on the project’s development during a courtesy call.
