In a first, Lucknow will get artificial intelligence-enabled camera surveillance for the safety of citizens.

A total of 1,000 AI cameras equipped with face recognition technology have been installed at key locations across the city.

Municipal Commissioner and CEO of Smart City Lucknow, Inderjit Singh, said: "As part of the Safe City project, these CCTV cameras have been placed strategically and will capture suspicious movement of persons by scanning faces against police database and alert control rooms in case of any criminal activity."

Some projects under the Smart Cities Mission would not be able to meet the June 30 deadline and the respective state governments would be responsible for completing them thereafter, Union Housing and Urban Affairs Secretary Manoj Joshi told the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Housing and Urban Affairs.

In its report on the evaluation of the Smart Cities Mission presented in the Lok Sabha on Thursday, the committee said the ministry had informed it that 400 projects, out of the 7,970, worth Rs 22,814 crore would take beyond December 2024 to complete. Last year, the Ministry had extended the mission’s deadline from June 2023 to June 2024.

The panel asked the union ministry of housing and urban affairs (MoHUA) to handhold cities to complete the projects even after the SCM deadline ends in June 2024

The flagship Smart Cities Mission (SCM) should be extended to a second phase with a focus on second-tier cities to decongest state capitals, and special purpose vehicles (SPVs) created to run the mission be continued, a parliamentary standing committee recommended in its report tabled in Parliament on Thursday.

Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, who oversees Urban Affairs, provided an update on Monday regarding the progress of smart city projects in the state.

Dhar informed reporters that while the smart road phase-I project is underway, it has encountered some disruptions due to narrow roads and the presence of pipelines underground. He explained, “Some parts have been dug, but we cannot proceed directly due to the existence of a pipeline, as per the report received by me.”
