Transforming Government since 2001
The mismatch between the government’s benchmark for the number of broadband connections and the actual number continues, said Kuldeep Goyal, chairman and managing director of BSNL, New Delhi.

He said that the company currently had 7 million broadband customers, including wireless and wireline ones, which it hopes to take to 20 million by 2010.

He was speaking at the launch of prepaid broadband service here on Friday.

Goyal said, “This service will be beneficial for those who travel frequently. They can use it for small period and the account can be accessed from anywhere in India, excepting for Delhi and Mumbai.” Of the 4.3 million nationwide BSNL broadband customers, Karnataka ranks first with 4.8 lakh. “We hope to reach to the rural parts of the state with this broadband and make it affordable to people with a minimum tariff of Rs 99,” said P Raghavan, chief general manager of Karnataka Telecom Circle, Bangalore.

He said that by this year end BSNL will be introducing wi-max and 3rd generation GSM services.

M N Vidyashankar, principal secretary of the state's e-governance department and first customer of prepaid broadband connection said, “About 5,700 gram panchayats will be connected with broadband services by end of March, 2010.”
