The issue came up during the discussions Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology Sachin Pilot held here with officials of the Obama administration over the past two days.
The talks focused on taking the India-US economic and technological collaboration to the next level through joint innovation, the Indian Embassy said in a statement after the meetings.
Among the officials who called on him were the newlyappointed Under Secretary for International Trade Administration Francisco Sanchez, Federal Chief Technology Officer Aneesh Chopra, Federal Chief Information Officer Vivek Kundra and Senior Adviser for Innovation Alec Ross.
Outlining Indian plans in the field of communications and information technology, Pilot said the government was working on providing broadband connectivity to remote villages to enable access to healthcare, education and other services. He also dwelt on the progress on e-governance and plans to expand its scope and coverage.
India’s IT sector, as the driving force of the service industry, will need hardware worth an estimated 400 billion US dollars.
He spoke of the huge potential still to be tapped as only 8 percent of Indian households have access to a personal computer as of now.
