Union Minister Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Sharad Pawar launched the smart card based Public Distribution System through video conferencing from New Delhi on Tuesday.

In Haryana, food and supplies minister Mahendra Pratap Singh distributed the biometric and ration cards from the at the mini secretariat. The cards are being distributed in around four districts including Ambala, Karnal, Sonepat and Sirsa.

Addressing media persons, Singh said the e-governance plan would bring greater transparency and efficiency and the cards will reduce chances of misuse of public distribution items.

“It would protect the rights of genuine stakeholders, would help in fast disposal of stakeholder grievances, dissemination of information etc,” said Singh. He said the project would gradually be expanded to other parts of the state.

He also expressing his concern over food grains rotting because of poor storage system and demanded better store houses to prevent the loss.

Director of Department of Food and Supplies Balraj Singh said the Central government has invested around Rs 137 crores on the project for the state alone. “The project will have e-based licensing of ration depots to issue ration cards and help in reducing issuance of fake ration cards,” he said.
