With new programmes being launched by almost every renowned university, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has also added its name in the list. It has newly launched a postgraduate certificate programme in geoinformatics.

The subject is said to be derived from our daily lives as it is a part of it. The programme has been designed and developed with the help of experts from IIT, IIIT, ISRO, DRDO, C-DAC and also various other universities across India as well.

As per Meenal Mishra, associate professor, School of Science, Ignou, the subject is initiated in the P.G courses as because it is now taught in schools. This move will have to make the teachers get trained for the subject.

The subject will have three theory papers and a practical component. The programme will cover areas such as remote sensing, geographic information system, global positioning system, image interpretation, digital image processing and cartography. With so many areas covered the knowledge will be increased and the hands-on training in the basics of geoinformatics technologies will help the learners to use the technology and get a wide scope for careers in various sectors related with the subject. Candidates are expected to get employment opportunities in agriculture, environment management, rural planning, e-governance, social sciences, among others.

The eligibility criterion for the subject is to have science subject at the graduation level and at 10+2 level as well. It will be a January or July session and the programme can be completed in six months to two years, as said by the officials.
