The engineering wing attached to Kozhikode corporation has commenced detailed study to collect data pertaining to various selection criteria set up by Union government to include the local self government bodies under its smart city project. The engineering wing will table the report in the council meeting to be held this month to take a decision to achieve the benchmark fixed for the smart city project selection.

The engineering wing has started preparing project pertaining to existing status of solid waste management, sanitation, toilet facility, environment aspects, e-governance implementation, electricity and drinking water availability. Urban affairs department which made announcement about the possible inclusion of seven local bodies in the state,comprising Thrissur, Kochi, Kollam, Kozhikode, Thiruvananthapuram, Malappuram and Kannur including the corporation here, had already held discussions with the local bodies to begin process relatded to it.

Regional Town Planner K V Abdul Malik said that the state government had already forwarded the draft concept of smart cities to the selected local self-government body department in the state to start working to fulfill the measures to find a place in the smart city scheme. "Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is one of the major criterion included in the draft guidelines of the selection procedure. The meeting chaired by local self-government department secretary had urged the mayors and municipal chairmen to start preparing schemes to achieve the set benchmarks of the union government," he said.

Corporation superintending engineer K D Ajayagosh said that the engineering staff has already started survey and preparing report to find out the existing status of various facilities available in the corporation. "One of the set criteria is ensuring toilets in all houses. Though there are funds available in the corporation, no one is approaching us seeking aid to set up toilet facilities. The exact picture of existing status of various facilities will be available within a week. Detailed plan will be chalked out to achieve the set eligibility criteria to get funding under the smart city scheme," he said,

Meanwhile, deputy mayor P T Abdul Latheef said that the civic body already commenced process to meet the tentative criteria set for the selection of cities under the Smart city project. "The civic body is giving stress to cleanliness and clean Kozhikode campaign is one of the components of Swachh Barat initiative of the Union government. The civic body has already started process for the effective e-governance," he said.
