The Union Territory of Chandigarh has been conferred with the award for outstanding performance during the 'Digital India Week'. The award was presented by union minister for communications and information technology Ravi Shankar Prasad at a function organized by the ministry of communications and information technology (IT) in New Delhi on Monday.

The department of electronics and information technology through this award has recognized the e-governance initiatives of Chandigarh under taken during the Digital India Week held from July 1 to 7 under the leadership of IT secretary S B Deepak Kumar and IT director Prince Dhawan. During the week, the department of IT and SPIC undertook various Chandigarh specific key e-governance initiatives. The week long campaign involved launch of e-stamping in Chandigarh in all sampark centres which replaced the system of physical stamp papers and launch of digital locker at a large scale for citizens with enrollment drive to "DigiLocker" across all e-Sampark centre. The department of IT also conducted an exclusive campaign on information security and education awareness. In order to augment connectivity in rural areas, a project was launched under which all 12 gram panchayats were connected with optical fiber.

Dhawan said "It is a turning point for the city beautiful which is embarking upon its journey to becoming a Smart City. This award is recognition for the efforts undertaken by the administration in improving the citizen services. We are also working towards newer initiatives which will be launched in the near future." The department of IT has been performing very well in recent days. It has now bagged at least six prestigious national awards for good work in the area of e-governance," Dhawan added.
