“Vodafone Idea is conducting a trial on use of street furniture for small cells and aerial fibre deployment in Bhopal Smart City, as part of a pilot by TRAI. These pilots are aimed at making cross-sectoral infrastructure more accessible for quick roll out of the 5G networks,” said the telco in a statement. It added that the learnings of this project will, in turn, be used for 5G deployment in other smart cities in the country.

Vodafone Idea (Vi) Saturday said it has demonstrated 5G download speed of 1Gbps at four locations in the Bhopal Smart City under a pilot project by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) on the use of street furniture.

Vi in a statement said it has demonstrated the abovementioned download speed on a mobile handset at four locations – New Market, Jyoti Square, Prabhat Petrol Pump, and Inter State Bus Terminus.

Street furniture such as traffic signal pole, street light pole, smart pole, billboard, direction board, road signage, foot over bridge, and city bus shelter, among others, are being used for testing 5G small cells.

The third-largest telco on Thursday said it demonstrated a 5G download speed of 1.2Gbps on a mobile handset at MG Road Station in Bengaluru, under the telecom regulator’s pilot project, adding that learnings will help 5G deployment at other metro railway stations in the country.

Trai had initiated pilot testing of 5G networks in four areas with the major telecom service providers ahead of the spectrum auctions.

The telecom regulator has conducted pilot tests in 11 locations in Bhopal Smart City to test 5G readiness using street furniture like traffic signal poles, street lights, billboards, road signage, foot over bridges and city bus shelters.

5G small cells over street furniture was also deployed at Deendayal Port Kandla, GMR International Airport, New Delhi and at the MG Road station of Namma Metro Bengaluru with the major telcos - Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea, and BSNL participating in the trials.

Small cells are low-powered, compact, easy-to-deploy radio access nodes with a coverage range from a few meters up to a few hundred meters.

5G spectrum auction, which commenced on Tuesday with 72GHz of airwaves on the block, was underway on Saturday, driven entirely by the fight for the UP (East) Circle.

By day 4, i.e., Friday, the government had received committed bids worth Rs 1,49,855 crore.
