The convergence of AI (Artificial Intelligence) and GIS (Geographic Information Systems) has unearthed several real-world applications for the new concept, and completely revolutionized the sector in a number of ways. To truly understand how the marriage of AI and GIS could benefit governments and private entities, we must first understand what GIS is used for. 

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are complex and intuitive computer systems, which help capture, collect, store, check, process, analyse, and manage geographical data. This software displays various types of information such as: streets, buildings, vegetation, and much more. Thousands of organizations across the world utilize GIS to create detailed maps, share information, identify problems, monitor changes, manage and respond to emerging events, and understand trends. This basic understanding of what GIS can do is enough to reveal potential real-world applications of such technology.  

However, when enhanced with the unique abilities of AI, GIS can be used for a range of mission-critical solutions such as: epidemic control, climate forecasting, assessment of renewable energy potential, logistics management, data cleansing, image interpretation, semantic classification and segmentation, handwriting recognition, speech recognition, face recognition, virtual reality, image processing and more.

Judging solely based on these application and ideas, it is easy to see why AI GIS has become the primary focus of geoscience research and the countless ways it can benefit from this amalgamation. A deeper look into the precise applications of AI GIS in the modern world will reveal just how utilitarian and necessary this partnership will be for a safe, secure, sustainable, and sensible future.

AI GIS for Intelligent Urban Development and City Planning

It is paramount to design technological solutions that help construction companies use the available resources more efficiently and improve information management. Unreasoned planning and construction lead to unsustainable urbanization and inefficient public services. When AI is integrated into GIS software, it can change the game by providing valuable real-time insights. AI GIS for Road Health Monitoring

AI GIS assists the process of road health monitoring by leveraging the power of AI, ML, and geospatial technology. For micro scale road monitoring, this solution uses real-time drone images, and AI enabled image processing and recognition methods to accurately detect potholes of up to 5 inches deep. For macro scale road monitoring, near real-time very high-resolution satellite images and AI based algorithms are used with an excellent accuracy resulting in a similar outcome on a larger scale.

AI GIS for Number Plate Identification

Automatic Number Plate Identification (ANPI) technology uses optical character recognition on images of vehicle registration plates to read the vehicle’s registration number. An automatic license plate recognition system applies different AI enabled image processing techniques to swiftly and automatically identify vehicles in video or photo footage from cameras.

These ANPI systems can be installed at a specific location and point in time, such as traffic signals and toll booths. Additionally, mobile APNI systems can be carried by a vehicle and used to scan the number plates of other vehicles. A police car can carry such a system in order to track down wanted vehicles efficiently.

AI GIS for Geo-Tagging of Trees / Geo Fencing

Geotagging is a process of assigning a ‘geo-tag’ or adding some ‘geographical information’ in various ‘media’ forms such as a digital photograph, video, or even in an SMS. Geotagging has already proved to be a powerful tool in monitoring various environmental projects in many of Indian states. This can further be used by the Indian government to improve environmental conditions and monitor or research forest and farm activity remotely.

As the world continues its search for more intelligent, sustainable, and reliable solutions, the marriage of AI and GIS can serve as the foundation and solution for many existing GIS problems. AI GIS has realized the computer vision extraction of geographic information such as remote sensing images, and videos, now we can introduce AI powered technology such as voice recognition, facial recognitions, and language processing technology to further use these unique applications and abilities for mission-critical solutions pertaining to pollution-control, disease-control, healthcare enhancement, and smart city planning.
