The Patna Smart City Limited (PSCL) has introduced the state-of-the-art 'adaptive traffic control system' (ATCS) to facilitate effective management of traffic, ensure commuters' safety and surveillance in the city.
As a pilot project, the new traffic system has been made operational at Bakarganj Mor, Buddha Colony, JP Golambar, Dak Bungalow Crossing and Income Tax-roundabout.
The system changes the timer for red and green lights as per the actual traffic load and minimize the traffic as per the need, reduce waiting time at junctions and save fuel. It is controlled from the centralized Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) near Gandhi Maidan that collects data from various traffic sensors at busy junctions to make decisions based on real-time data.
With this system, the traffic signal timing changes, adjusts according to actual traffic demand moving from a particular side and increase the time limit of green light on its own, sources said, adding that the sensors help in clearing more traffic at busy junctions and commuters will not have to wait in long traffic queues.
The PSCL has planned to install the smart traffic system at 30 busy locations across the city under the smart city mission. "We have already started ATCS system at six locations as a trial run in order to ensure that it would make the roads safer for everyone with real-rime monitoring of traffic movement. Installation of automated traffic signal has been going on at 24 other locations," the officials said.
These areas include Patna airport (north gate), Anisabad Mor, Beur Mor, Bhattacharya Road, Chitkora Circle, Convent Mor, Sheikhpura Mor, Digha- Ashiana Mor, NIT Mor, Exhibition Road, Hartali Mor, Kargil Chowk, Kotwali police station, Kurji Mor, Mohini Mor, Nala Road Mor, PMCH Mor, Patel Chowk, Punaichak, Ram Goolam Chowk, SP Verma Mor, Saguna Mor, Voltas Mor and Dhunki Mor.
According to officials, apart from assessing traffic queue length and managing duration, the system also ensures that pedestrians crossing signals have enough time to avoid accidents. "It will provide a green corridor for emergency vehicles and allow the VIP movements by controlling the cycle time manually on individual roundabouts and intersections through the centralized control room. ATCS is one of the component of ICCC project of the PSCL," the officials said.
