The Mangaluru Smart City Limited (MSCL) has introduced advanced technology to enhance traffic management and enforcement in the city.

MSCL has installed high-resolution cameras equipped with radar and artificial intelligence (AI) tools to monitor traffic flow and detect violations effectively. The cameras will provide real-time visuals, while the AI tools will analyse the captured footage to identify and track any traffic offences. These high-resolution cameras and AI tools will effectively monitor traffic movement and act against violations. These cutting-edge cameras are being installed at 15 strategic locations throughout Mangaluru, to ensure comprehensive coverage of the city’s traffic network. The command and control centre, developed under the Smart City project, was implemented at a cost of Rs 14 crore in the first phase. Meanwhile, Rs 19 crore is being utilized in the second phase. The high-resolution cameras and radar are being installed at 15 junctions in the city. The poles have already been installed at Ballalbagh, Besant Junction, and Kodialbail for installing cameras and radar.

MSCL general manager (technical) Arun Prabha KS said that the cameras will record violations such as signal jumping, triple riding, not wearing helmets and seat belts, and the like, by clearly capturing the registration numbers of such vehicles. The radars will capture speed violations on the highway, he added, noting that the works are likely to be completed by the end of June.

Under phase two of the command and control centre project, adopting a traffic management system with synchronisation of signals is being taken up. After the cameras capture the image of traffic violators, challans will be issued, and notices will be served to the contact number of the violators by police. A corridor management system will be introduced through artificial intelligence back-end programming of the command and control centre, he said. Traffic can be controlled through an intelligent traffic management system (ITMS). During heavy traffic, changes can be made for synchronisation of signals through the ITMS. Roads from Kottara Chowki to Kottara, Ladyhill, Narayana Guru Circle, Ballalbagh, PVS, Navabharath Circle, Hampankatta as well as the stretch from Bunts Hostel, Ambedkar Circle, Hampankatta, Clock Tower, AB Shetty Circle, Hamilton Circle, Pandeshwara, Mangaladevi, Mahakalipadpu, and Jeppinamogaru on NH-66 will be brought under one corridor to manage the traffic, the officer said.

The MSCL, under the Integrated Command and Control Centre phase-1, has already provided smart poles at Kavoor, Padavinangady, PVS Circle, Narayana Guru Circle (Lady Hill), Lalbagh, Kadri Circuit House, Mallikatte, Agnes, Pumpwell, Padil, Hampankatta, Bunts Hostel, Mangaladevi, Rao & Rao, and Hamilton Circle. The cameras that are being installed will be in addition to the smart poles and surveillance cameras that are already functioning in the city, he added.
