Transforming Government since 2001

Uttar Pradesh is set to transform 57 municipalities into smart cities. The state’s Urban Development Department has rolled out a major digital infrastructure initiative, backed by an ambitious investment of ₹40,000 crore, with an initial disbursement of ₹145 crore.

The plan aims to revolutionise the quality of civic life by integrating cutting-edge technologies into daily administrative and citizen services across key district headquarters. The ambitious project will equip these municipalities with comprehensive digital systems, designed to foster transparency, improve service delivery, and strengthen civic engagement. Command and control centres equipped with AI-powered management tools, extensive CCTV surveillance, and chatbot-based citizen interaction modules will form the backbone of the new urban framework. In a noteworthy sustainable shift, integrated cowshed management systems will also be introduced to address urban livestock challenges while maintaining ecological balance. These technological advancements are a step towards not only smart governance but also environmentally conscious urban planning.

The government has already demonstrated success by implementing smart systems in 17 cities, offering a tested foundation for scaling this transformative model. Emphasising inclusive and sustainable development, the new municipalities are expected to boost local economies by attracting investments, promoting tourism, creating jobs, and protecting natural resources. By embedding green practices and pollution control measures into the design, the project aligns with the broader objective of building zero-carbon, eco-friendly cities. Smart parking solutions, digital traffic and lighting management, waterlogging mitigation measures, and uninterrupted power and water supply are among the key facilities that will redefine the urban living experience.

In addition to improving basic amenities, the municipalities will see a significant upgrade in public infrastructure. Planned developments include construction of concrete roads, redesigned traffic junctions, digital libraries, exhibition centres, and community auditoriums. With a focus on supporting street vendors, designated vending zones will also be established, ensuring equitable growth and safeguarding livelihoods. Through these strategic interventions, Uttar Pradesh is positioning itself at the forefront of India’s digital urban revolution, crafting cities that are sustainable, inclusive, and capable of meeting the evolving aspirations of their citizens.
