The Srinagar Smart City Limited (SSL) is set to introduce an E-card system, known as the NCMP card, for women passengers using the free travel facility on electric buses. This step aims to tackle overcrowding and ensure that only registered beneficiaries avail the service.
The free bus service for women, launched recently by the Omar Abdullah-led NC government as part of a centrally funded initiative, has significantly boosted the popularity of the Smart City electric buses. However, the rise in ridership has caused overcrowding, leading to challenges for both passengers and operators.
Speaking to Gulistan News, the Operational Manager of Smart City Buses confirmed that the E-card system is likely to be introduced within the next two weeks. “Initially, the card will not be mandatory, but it will become essential over time,” he said.
He further explained that the E-card will help to monitor how women utilize the service and enable the department to gather data for future improvements. In the first phase, around 5,000 E-cards will be distributed to women passengers.
