Bahrain's eGovernment Authority (eGA) has announced a significant increase in electronic financial transactions via its National Portal since the beginning of the year. eGA figures show that the number of transactions reached 12,550, worth around BD940,000, in the third quarter of this year alone. This represented a 200 per cent increase in number of transactions and a 250pc increase in overall amount compared to the first quarter.

As part of its commitment to offering flexible payment solutions to the public, the eGA National Portal allows them to use regular debit cards which deduct the required total directly from the users' bank accounts. Debit card transactions accounted for approximately 20pc of the total number of transactions, the rest were done by credit card.

"These figures clearly demonstrate the growing trust and acceptance of the eGA National Portal among the public and government entities, and also goes to show the effectiveness of the services available through it, especially financial ones," said eGA chief executive officer Mohammed Al Qaed.

This jump in number of financial transactions is largely due to the wide range of financial services offered via the eGA National Portal which currently includes paying utility bills, traffic fines, booking pre-employment medical checkups, as well as paying University of Bahrain's student tuition fees.

Since its launch in August last year, the average daily traffic to the eGA National Portal has tripled, thanks in large part to its ever growing number of basic governmental eServices, currently numbering 67, and will almost certainly grow as more eServices are added.

To accommodate the mounting demand, the eGA signed an agreement with Gulf Business Machines to develop the National Portal's infrastructure and increase its capacity tenfold.

"The increase in usage of the eGA National Portal comes shortly after it won the Arab GoldenChip Award for the best eGovernment Application in the Middle East, and we will continue our efforts in offering the best eGovernment services to all sectors of the Bahraini community through the eGA National Portal," Mr Al Qaed said.
