In a ceremony held at its premises here on Friday, the United Nations honoured the Dubai Municipality for wining the 2006 public services award in the area of application of information technology and telecommunications in the government sector, e-government.

By winning the award, Dubai becomes the first Arab city to win the prestigious award.

The award was also conferred on other 11 enterprises around the world as well as official institutions from Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, India, Holland, Rwanda, Singapore and Zambia.

Hussein Lootah, acting director, Dubai Municipality, received the award on behalf of the municipality.

In a post-ceremony statement, Lootah the vision espoused by the UAE leadership had led to the re-drawing of the administrative performance plan.

He congratulated H.H Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, for the award, which he said would place Dubai among the best public e-service providers in the world.

The award covers three major areas, including transparency, accountability and the public service’s response to the basic needs of the people.

The award recognises the recipient’s role in improving public services.
