Organized by the Abu Dhabi Systems '&' Information Centre (ADSIC), the two-day seminar aimed at promoting cooperation between the UAE and the Republic of South Korea in general and to exchange expertise and knowledge to develop Abu Dhabi's Information Technology and Communication (ICT) sector in particular.
The Korean delegation expressed their appreciation of the positive and concrete results achieved by Abu Dhabi's e-government program to establish the platform for a modern and effective e-government on par with the world's best examples. These results reflect the classification of Abu Dhabi amongst the world's best 35 countries in most common indicators as analyzed in 2008. Abu Dhabi had raised from being No. 27 in 2007 to No. 17 in 2008 on the network Rediness index, an honorable stride forward in one single year as compared with advanced countries. On the business sector Rediness index, Abu Dhabi had raised from the world's 23rd position to the 2nd position, while on the government departments' index, it had jumped from the 21st position to the 3rd position. The Korean delegates expressed optimism towards the possibility of further improving these results through mutual cooperation between the two countries.
Taihee Lee, Head, Policy Consultation Division Center for International Development (CID), Korea Development Institute (KDI) said "I've been working with GCC member countries with the higher socio-economic and cultural similarity and solidarity, which seek the same development challenges. The current economic development in this area slowly reveals their great development potentials. These changes have been and will be led by the United Arab Emirates.
''Abu Dhabi is standing at the center of this current change and challenge. Abu Dhabi approaches the future-oriented development strategy differently from the logistical huh-building case. In particular, if the strategy on developing ICT sector as sustainable growth engine will be materialized through enhanced HRD, R'&'D and innovation, Abu Dhabi can become an ICT leader in the Middle and Northern African region within a short period, and finally a global leader in the area of ICT sector. Abu Dhabi will become the first country in the region smoothly building the knowledge-based Economy".
The sessions of the second day comprised of four work sessions: The first session "the role of the ICT in the economic development of the other sectors" where Dr.Songook PARK (KISDI) and Dr. Amir Mafani (Executive Council General Secretariat - Abu Dhabi) were the speakers for the first session. The second session tackled "The Use of the ICT in Society" via two presentations carried out by Dr. Yoon-seok KO (NIA) and Khalifa Al Hameeri (ADSIC).
