The Information and eGovernment Sector at the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) held a technical meeting to discuss best ways of applying cloud computing at a national level in the UAE.

The meeting was headed by H.E. Salem Khamis Al Shair Al Suwaidi, Deputy Director General for Information and eGovernment Sector, TRA. It was attended by a number of senior managers at TRA including Salem Al Housani, Deputy Director - Emirates eGovernment, Mohammed Gheyath, Executive Director Technology Development Affairs, Mohammed Al Zarooni, .aeDA Director, Tariq Al Hawi, aeCERT Director, Majid Al Madhloum, Security Quality Services Team Leader, Ahmad Hassan, Monitoring and Response Team Leader, Abdulrahman Al Marzouqi, Manager - Internet Developments and Meshal bin Hussain, Operation Manager.

The meeting witnessed detailed discussions about the topic of cloud computing. The TRA team listened to a presentation by Biswajeet Mahapatra, Research Director at "Gartner" about government applications of cloud computing. The presentation discussed the different technical, economic and security aspects of adopting cloud computing by government. Mr. Mahapatra reviewed some examples of cloud computing usage in different countries around the world.

Benefits of cloud computing include standardisation of hardware, software and services among government entities resulting in reducing costs and higher utilisation of existing resources, in addition to helping preserve the environment.

Cloud services most used by governments include email, chat, anti-virus programmes, data gathering apps, back-up and storage services among others.
