Transforming Government since 2001
BlackBerry Middle East has announced a tie-up with the UAE's Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) that will see the vendor support the mGovernment initiative outlined by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai.

The initiative is part of a UAE-wide effort to make the country's e-government services available across mobile devices, thereby creating a ‘smart government'. BlackBerry's contribution to this will be to provide support and expertise in the development of a Mobile Centre of Excellence.

One of the key driving forces for the project will be an application development lab within the TRA. According to BlackBerry, the Dubai-based lab will be the first of its kind in the Arab region, and will be dedicated to verifying the security and quality of mGovernment mobile apps. The vendor said that it would assist in developing apps for the BlackBerry 10 platform, as well as provide support and training to government development teams.

"As strong supporters of the UAE mGovernment's vision, our legacy in mobile communications and technology can play a pivotal role in making the vision a reality," said Dave Pryce, vice president of government relations at BlackBerry EMEA.

"Through our partnership, we will be providing the TRA with expertise, industry knowledge and best practices built over two decades. We bring expertise from our deep heritage in security, application development, enterprise mobility and interface design based on our experience in 165 countries."

BlackBerry said it would also assist the TRA in developing application labs at UAE-based universities, to help students and government employees who want to develop applications.

"Working with students and universities to provide education and knowledge transfer for application development will establish this skill as part of the general curriculum in business and computer science courses," added Pryce.
