Transforming Government since 2001
The State Services Commission has signed the first agency contracts for the Government Shared Network (GSN), with the Department of Labour and Maritime New Zealand.

They are the first of five agencies to migrate network services to the GSN by the end of 2006.

The GSN is part the e-government project and will enable government agencies to share information at higher speeds, more cost effectively. It will also improve the delivery of information and services to the New Zealand public.

Formal agreements with other agencies, including the Ministry of Education are also near completion, with 17 more intending to sign.

Laurence Millar, Deputy Commissioner Information and Communications Technology, said, "These signings are a terrific first step towards a more a robust, flexible communications infrastructure to support cross-sector and inter-agency initiatives.

"The GSN directly supports delivery of efficient and effective public services and is an important tool for a networked, co-ordinated and accessible State Services," he said.

"By integrating our disparate networks and service providers, our working environment will become much more efficient and accessible," said James Buwalda, Department of Labour chief executive and Secretary of Labour.

GSN is a networking platform that enables inter-agency collaboration and facilitates easier and more efficient access to information across a dedicated infrastructure secured to government standards. It allows high-speed connection of agencies with a ‘Restricted' security standard, secure remote access, a secure internet gateway with virus and SPAM filtering and internet telephony.
