Transforming Government since 2001
China has set an ambitious 15-year goal of establishing a 'information society' considered critical for the Communist giant's steady march to become a developed nation.

The General Office of the Communist Party of China's Central Committee and Office of the Chinese cabinet has published the State Informatisation Development Strategy (2006-2020), setting up the goals under the plan.

The goals set under the programme for next 15 years include providing information infrastructure nationwide, strengthening capacities of independent innovation of information technology, optimising the information industry structure and improving information security.

China also hopes to make effective progress on building a more information-oriented national economy and society apart from establishing a new type of industrialisation model, the blueprint said.

It also states nine key aspects in the 15-year plan which include promoting informatisation of the national economy, popularising e-government, establishing advanced Internet culture, popularising information infrastructure, improving information industry competition and building national information security system.

Implementation of the strategy will lay a good foundation for China which is striding toward the information society, the blueprint said.

As China is in the process of building a moderately prosperous society in all respects, vigorously pushing forward informatisation development will be crucial in promoting social and economic development, the report said.
