The Digital 21 Strategy Advisory Committee has welcomed the Government's plan to provide Wi-Fi facilities at Government premises.

At the committee's meeting today, members said the project will help uphold Hong Kong's status as a leading digital city because the wider availability of Wi-Fi networks will facilitate the delivery of e-government services through wireless and mobile channels.

Outsourcing the implementation and operation of the programme will bring new business opportunities to the local information and communications technology industry, it added.

In response to commercial concerns on the Government's provision of free Wi-Fi services in specified public parks, the committee said three parks to be covered under the programme only formed an insignificant part of the public areas in Hong Kong which are open to commercial provision of wireless and mobile services.

It believed the Wi-Fi initiative will encourage development of wireless and mobile applications and usage of the wireless and mobile channels, to the benefit of the industry and Hong Kong as a whole.
